The 2013 Ferrari F12berlinetta ushers in a new generation of Ferrari 12-cylinders in the form of a car that delivers unprecedented performance from an exceptional new engine, unparalleled handling and innovative design and aerodynamics.

Every time Ferrari has unveiled a new 12-cylinder sports car since 1947, something magical has happened. Perhaps this has to do with the fact that our very first car, the 125 S, was itself a 12-cylinder or maybe it's because purists see the 12-cylinder as the engine size par excellence. Be that as it may, every time a Prancing Horse car of this kind makes its debut, it hails the start of a new era. There have been several 12-cylinder models built here at Maranello that have gone down in the annals of automotive history because of their technological prowess and the results they've delivered. The 1953 375 America, for instance, had an engine derived directly from the F1 single-seater of the day, while the 250 GTO in the 1960s was the perfect melding of styling and performance. That list must also include, of course, the 1969 365 GTB4, better known simply as the Daytona, which, thanks to its brilliantly balanced architecture delivered absolutely unique driving emotions. All of these engines and cars are now eagerly sought after by collectors the world over and each one represented major generational leap forward when it debuted. 

This story continues today with the Ferrari F12berlinetta which is not merely our latest mid-front 12-cylinder model but the first in a whole new generation of this kind of car. In fact, it is the most high performance Ferrari ever built yet it still effortlessly marries extreme performance with benchmark efficiency, delivering fuel consumption and emissions levels that are 30% lower than the previous generation. The challenge for our engineers and technicians this time was to create a front-engined car with blistering performance that was still able to offer the same driving pleasure and involvement at lower speeds. A difficult task because it meant improving on the design of the 599 GTB Fiorano, deemed the most beautiful Ferrari ever. However, their commitment and determination has produced a car sporting an exceptional new 740 hp mid-front V12 engine that delivers 690 Nm of torque.

Its engine and driver's seat have both been lowered, the wheelbase is shorter and a new suspension and gearbox layout have helped compact the rear. The result is a more compact car than the 599 GTB Fiorano. One that also has perfect weight distribution with 54% over the rear axle and a lower, pulled-back centre of gravity to boot. Thanks to all these characteristics, the Ferrari F12berlinetta delivers truly exceptional performance figures: 0-200 km/h in 8.5 seconds and a lap time at Fiorano of just 1'23". The Ferrari F12berlinetta's spaceframe chassis and bodyshell are both entirely new too and employ 12 different aluminium alloys - some being used for the first time in the automotive sector - and an array of leading-edge assembly and joining technologies. 

This helped cut the car's overall weight to just 1,525 kg and maximise its performance efficiency, boosting torsional rigidity by 20%. As with every Ferrari, the F12berlinetta's aerodynamics were developed hand-in-glove with its styling, resulting in a plethora of innovative solutions. Not least of these are the Aero Bridge, which uses the car's bonnet to create downforce for the first time, and Active Brake Cooling, a system of guide vanes on the brake air ducts which open when brake operating temperatures are high enough. The result is that the Ferrari F12berlinetta is the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari ever (a figure of 1.12 - double that of the 599 GTB Fiorano) with a Cd of 0.299 and downforce of 123 kg at 200 km/h.

The product of the ongoing collaboration between the Ferrari Style Centre and Pininfarina, the Ferrari F12berlinetta's design centres around the car's brilliantly bilance proportions. It has an original innovative style featuring typical Ferrari 12-cylinder styling cues. Clothed in sleek, aggressively sculpted lines, it offers a superb standard of occupant space and comfort despite its compact exterior dimensions too.


EXTERIOR










We could simply summarize the F12berlinetta’s awesome styling by stating that it’s the 2012 Auto Bild Design Award winner, but that would be the easy way out. Despite its ease of exit, that statement in itself just proves how much time and effort Ferrari put into making the F12berlinetta a car that people are satisfied with even just getting an up-close glimpse at.

Up front, you get this bold combination of style and aggression that is enough to make even the most experienced driver a little uneasy. The thin lower lip leads you up to a sinister looking grin that the lower grille creates which almost looks like it is daring you to hop into the driver’s seat and take it for a spin, if you can handle it. The twin horizontal bras of the grill are intersected by a quintuplet of vertical bars, giving this grin a full set of teeth. Flanking the grille are two air-intake vents that electronically open and close to allow cooling air to flow over the front brakes, as needed.

The projector headlights sit inside lenses that seem to be one with the body, seamlessly flowing rearward to allow air to just slip off of the body, which is evident by the F12berlinetta’s 0.299 drag coefficient. Making up the outer edge of these sleek headlight assemblies is a line of LED lights, giving it a little extra flare.

Though the styling of the F12berlinetta may simply look like a work of art, there is a lot more science behind this artwork than you may know. The stylish and swooping hood actually does more than just catch your eye; it also catches the wind and creates massive down-force. The hood flanks are tall enough to channel air toward the center of the hood, creating this down-force and the air is then channeled through a pair of openings on either edge of the hood, near the windshield. This is a technology that Ferrari calls the Aero Bridge.

As the air escapes from these two vents at the rear of the hood, it is channeled into the valley cut into the doors. The valley then swoops around the car as you approach the rear end of the F12berlinetta.

Helping improve its aerodynamic drag and down-force production, Ferrari faired in the underside of the F12berlinetta – closed the underside off, so it is one smooth piece. This allows the air to flow under the car without creating excessive upward pressure or wind resistance. As the airflow approaches the rear of the fairing, it is redirected upward and out of the vents just in front of the rear wheels. This rush of air creates a large amount of down-force on the rear axle without increasing aerodynamic drag too much.

From that point, the remaining air flows under the center of the faired underside of the F12berlinetta and hits the rear diffuser to create the remaining down-force and reduce drag. In all, the body design of the F12berlinetta creates a total of 123 kg (271 lbs) of down-force without the use of any additional spoilers beyond the rear diffuser. That’s quite an impressive feat to say the least.

The overall focus of the F12berlinetta was to take what Ferrari had built with the 599 GTB and make it better. Ferrari achieved this by dropping 70 kg (154 lbs) of weight from the 599 GTB, mostly from the areas that hang over the edges of the wheelbase. This is exactly why so much focus went into effective use of airflow, as Ferrari didn’t need to add extra weight to the body in the form of spoilers. That knocks off most of the weight right there.

Ferrari also knocked 47 mm (1.85 inches) in length, 63 mm (2.48 inches) in length and 20 mm (0.787 inches) in width from the 599 GTB’s dimensions. In order to meet the aerodynamic needs, you’ll also notice that Ferrari took the 599 GTB’s front glass and raked it rearward at a shallower angle and lowered the roofline significantly. The rear section is also significantly shorter on the F12berlinetta, as it only has 82 mm (3.22 inches) of overhang from the rearmost part of the wheelbase. All of this reduction and 12 different aluminum alloys that make up the body brings the F12berlinetta down to a svelte 1,525 kg (3,362 lbs).

Aerodynamics isn’t all the Ferrari was looking for though, which is noticeable as we approach the backside of the car. This collaboration between Ferrari design and Pininfarina Pininfarina nets us a Kammback-inspired rear end – Kamm is a famed aerodynamicist that used abruptly cut-off rear ends to help with reducing drag – that integrates with the rear spoiler.

Around the back end you also get a unique “T” shape that starts at the center of the lower, rear fascia and wraps around the dual circular LED taillights. Flanking the base of the “T” is a pair of dual exhaust exits, giving the F12berlinetta a total of four exhaust escapes.

Just imagining the thought process and ingenuity that went into designing the F12berlinetta to be both beautiful and functional is mind boggling. As per usual, Ferrari out shined Lamborghini in body form, fit, and function, but there is more to a supercar than just its looks, so let’s continue onto the interior.



INTERIOR
















While the interior was not quite as carefully crafted as its exterior, the F12berlinettta’s interior certainly received some attention. The overall volume of the interior was reduced to help enhance the F12berlinetta’s, but the usage of the space has been optimized. Ferrari managed to find a way to marry sporty and comfort inside the F12berlinetta’s cabin.

Unlike the overwhelming interior of the Aventador, the F12berlinetta gives you a clean look and feel that takes you into the world of racing where only the important buttons and gauges are displayed. The steering wheel is devoid of buttons that are unnecessary and the paddle shifters are in the perfect position behind the wheel to make shifting through the gears a seamless venture.

Even the air vents underwent some serious designing, as they are elegantly crafted from carbon fiber and aluminum alloy, giving the interior a little something extra that you may be missing in other supercars. The center console or center tunnel as Ferrari calls it, is not very overwhelming and has only the necessary components attached to it, like the gear selector, and hazard warning buttons.

The simplistic F12berlinetta interior continues to the door panel where everything just seems to flow with absoluter perfection. The armrest, door handle, tweeter, speaker, airbag and leather pocket all fluidly travel together along the panel, making it look as if they are all one piece. You can opt for your own addition to the door panels by adding in special touches, like aluminum borders underlining the panel’s already stellar lines.

The steering wheel looks as if it belongs in an art museum, as Ferrari managed to capture the essence of a racing steering wheel with the elegance of a luxury car. The focal point of the wheel is to give the driver perfect hand position, allowing for optimal grip, but it also features just enough control buttons to handle some of the car’s more important features. On the right side of the wheel, you have all of your technical goody controls, like the controls for the TFT infotainment screen, satellite navigation, stereo with Bluetooth streaming, and voice-activated audio controls. On the left side, you get all of you get-up-and-go controls, as it handles the Vehicle Dynamic Assistance functions, like: car status, potential performance, changing between RACE, CT-off and ESC-off modes, and other features.

The seats were carefully designed to offer maximum comfort while using minimal padding to make the most efficient use of the reduced cabin space in the F12berlinetta. The seats have great lateral support, and keep you stuck into place while you caress the corners in this machine. In addition to their support, integrated headrests give you more support and a sportier feel as you drive. Even with its reduced space, a person up to 6’4” can sit in the cabin comfortably and it holds up to 500 liters (17.65 cubic-feet) of luggage with its rear bench folded down.

The delicate ballet of mixing beauty and sport is a thing rarely achieved, but Ferrari did so with the F12berlinetta’s cockpit. It has the cleanliness that we all desire, but the options and controls that the modern age requires. What an impressive piece of machinery this car is becoming.



POWERTRAIN


The Ferrari F12berlinetta's 200-bar, direct-injection 6262 cc 65° V12 delivers absolutely unprecedented performance for a naturally aspirated 12-cylinder engine. It has a maximum power output of 740 CV at 8250 rpm, while its specific power output is a record-breaking 118 CV/l. Responsiveness and strong pick-up is guaranteed by maximum torque of 690 Nm, 80 per cent of which is already on tap at 2500 rpm, with a constant surge of power all the way up to the 8700 rpm rev limit. Just as is the case with F1 engines, the V12 has very low inertia and thus revs rise very rapidly.

Driving involvement is intensified by the rich, full exhaust soundtrack typical of Ferrari'snaturally-aspirated V12s. The Ferrari F12berlinetta's performance levels give a good idea of the engine's incredible efficiency, where both fuel consumption and emissions are now 30 per cent lower thanks to the Stop&Start system, a "smart" alternator, and Multispark ignition system. These, along with numerous other technical solutions, have reduced internal friction making the F12berlinetta best-in-class for its power-emissions ratio.

The car's compression ratio has also been increased to 13.5:1 and a new 3.0 ECU has been adopted that uses ionisation currents to control sparking and detect misfires. The Multispark ignition generates three sparks of different durations and intensities in quick succession. At low engine speeds, this optimises combustion and, consequently, lowers fuel consumption. The engine is also equipped with Stop&Start and a "smart" alternator which recharges the battery only when there is no demand for power. Meticulous attention was also paid to reducing internal friction, exhaust backpressure and intake depressurisation.

 The cylinder block has four oil scavenge pumps with rotors using smaller diameter blades which optimise extraction efficiency. Lubrication is guaranteed by an engine oil pump with variable geometry. The design of the pistons includes an anodising treatment to the first piston groove, with PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating on the first piston ring and Graphal-coated piston skirts. All of this reduces friction between the piston and the cylinder liner. The camshafts are super-finished using a lapping process that reduces surface roughness to under 0.05 Ra, thus minimising the coefficient of friction between the cam lobes and the tappets. The tappets themselves have been given a DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating that reduces their coefficient of friction, increasing performance and reducing fuel consumption.

The cylinder head features different conduit designs, new intake manifolds and new plenums fitted with resonators. The resonators create overpressure inside the intake tract the moment the intake valve opens and immediately before it closes, guaranteeing improved cylinder filling and generating a powerful supercharging effect which increases engine performance. The whole exhaust sequence has also been optimised - the catalysers have been miniaturised and hydroformed manifolds have been adopted, reducing their form and size without impinging on their capacity, resulting in improved permeability and reduced backpressure. The system's geometry and materials have been developed to harmonise the intake and exhaust soundtracks to underscore the car's extremely sporty character. All of the pipes connecting the 6-in-1 exhaust manifold to the single catalyser per bank are of equal length and this optimises the sound giving predominance to the first-order combustion harmonics. The characteristic engine sound can clearly be heard in the cockpit in all driving conditions.

The seven-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission boosts both performance and ride comfort at once. The technology involved is based on the independent management of odd and even gears which are pre-selected using two different in-put shafts. Gear shifting time - calculated as the overlap between the opening and closing phases of the two clutches - is thus zero and there is no interruption of torque delivery to the wheels. Shortened ratios have been developed for the Ferrari F12berlinetta and 7th gear is a direct ratio, not an overdrive, to ensure that the car's huge performance potential can be exploited in every gear. The E-Diff3 electronic differential has also been integrated into the gearbox, helping to cut the car's overall weight.



DESIGN


The Ferrari F12berlinetta delivers truly extraordinary performance and driving involvement thanks to its highly evolved transaxle architecture which was developed with extremely ambitious objectives in mind. These were to reduce overall weight, lower and move the centre of gravity rearwards in the chassis, and reduce the car's frontal area whilst contemporaneously increasing passenger and luggage space compared to the previous V12 coupé to ensure maximum comfort over lengthier journeys.

 To achieve these objectives, the engineers lowered the engine, dashboard and seats. Furthermore the rear of the car is now more compact, thanks to the repositioning and reduction in size of the fuel tank (permitted in part by a more efficient engine which delivers the same range as before) and to the new transaxle layout allowed by the rear multi-link suspension and F1 dual-clutch transmission with integrated electronic differential. Rather than a traditional separate boot, the F12berlinetta features a generous tail-gate incorporating the rear screen which contributes both to the compactness of the design, and the generous luggage space and its accessibility, while ensuring maximum structural rigidity. 

This solution also ensures that more of the car's mass sits inside the shorter wheelbase to the benefit of handling dynamics. The end result is a car that's lighter by 70 kg with a centre of gravity that's 25 mm lower. It's also shorter (-47mm), lower (-63 mm) and narrower (-20 mm) compared to the previous V12 coupé. The rear overhang has been greatly reduced (-82 mm) while the front one has been estende (+65 mm) to accommodate the cooling systems required for the powerful V12 engine. Weight distribution is ideal - 54% at the rear - and is unmatched by competitors within the segment.



AERODYNAMICS



The Ferrari F12berlinetta's aerodynamics were developed hand-in-hand with its styling, using CFD (computational fluid dynamic) simulations along with more than 250 hours of testing in the Wind Tunnel. Aside from external air flows, research focused on internal ones with particolar attention given to thermal factors (including the radiators, heat exchangers and brakes). Apart from boosting the car's fluid dynamic efficiency, this research also led to a reduction in volumes through the optimised packaging of the car's mechanical components. The result is that it is the most overall aerodynamically efficient Ferrari ever, a fact attested to by a figure of 1.12 (double that of the 599 GTB Fiorano). Downforce has been boosted by 76 per cent (123 kg at 200 km/h) while drag has been significantly reduced (the Cd is just 0.299).

The Ferrari F12berlinetta's aerodynamic efficiency brass is mostly generated by three elements: the Aero Bridge, the Blown Spoiler, the aerodynamic underbody. The Aero Bridge is an innovative solution that uses the bonnet to create downforce for the first time. It does so by availing of an aerodynamic channel on each side. These pass below a bridge in the area between the front wheelarch and the bottom of the A-pillar and deflect the airflow into scoops in the flanks where it interacts with the wake from the wheel wells to decrease drag. The Blown Spoiler uses the air flows near the rear of the car to modify, via special intakes, the pressure field in the wheel well, boosting overall efficiency. Lastly, the car's flat underbody has been greatly evolved, not least thanks to the fact that the front splitter which is now separate to the bumper. This generates downforce whilst simultaneously directing the air flows towards the rear extractor, improving efficiency. 

Aerodynamic dams and semi-cone diffusers have been placed ahead of the front wheels which, as well as generating downforce, also help cool the brakes. The rear dam has the dual role of directing the airflow away from the wheel and generating a vortex that isolates the underbody from the centrifugal forces caused by the movement of the rear wheels. The generous rear diffuser, has four fins, the middle two of which have vortex generators, and thus also contributes to the significant increase in downforce. When it comes to integrating fluid dynamics and thermal management, the central air vent on the bonnet boosts the efficiency of the cooling system and also helps lessen the impact of the air on the windscreen at high speeds, creating a cushion that deflects the natural air flow. Drag is also reduced by the Active Brake Cooling system of guide vanes on the brake air ducts which open only if brake operating temperatures are high enough.



STYLE


Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre in collaboration with Pininfarina, the F12berlinetta strikes a perfect balance between maximum aerodynamic efficiency and the elegant proportions typical of Ferrari's front-engined V12 cars. Designers and engineers worked in tandem to sculpt its surfaces so that they seamlessly incorporate the car's many innovative aerodynamic solutions by "subtraction" rather than having it bristling with different appendages. The result of this collaboration is an innovative system of air flows which make this car absolutely original and unique, a true marriage of technology and aesthetics: an essential requisite for all Prancing Horse cars in which form and function are inextricably linked. The Ferrari F12berlinetta has low, sleek coupé lines with powerfully sculpted flanks whose contours curve and dip to channel the air flows from the bonnet. The two aerodynamic channels, created by reducing the volume between the wings and central bonnet bulge, pass below a bridge in the area between the front wheelarch and the bottom of the A-pillar, before flowing into scoops in the flanks, lifting and lightening the car's look.

The front of the car is dominated by an imposing grille that draws air into the engine bay to cool the V12. On either side of it are electronically-controlled guide vanes which help cool the brakes. This is an original, active aerodynamic solution as, when closed, they cut drag and, when open, guarantee optimal brake cooling. The rear of the Ferrari F12berlinetta is characterised by a modern, functional reinterpretation of the Kamm tail which seamlessly integrates the two vertical fences of the rear diffuser. The resulting original T-shape also incorporates two full-LED circular tail-lights and the clearly F1-inspired rear fog light.



DYNAMIC & PERFORMANCE



With a Fiorano lap time of just 1'23", 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.1 seconds and 0 to 200 km/h in 8.5 seconds, the Ferrari F12berlinetta is the most high-performance car in Ferrari history. On top of pure performance figures, however, it is also incredibly fluid and intuitive to drive, thanks to its unique handling which inspires confidence at all speeds, not just on the limit on the track. This was achieved thanks in great part to the development work carried out on the layout which has helped the car take a massive leap forward in terms of agility and responsiveness, even at slower speeds, a characteristic more in keeping with mid-rear-engined cars until now. In addition to this, however, all the car's sub-systems were developed and integrated with each other specifically to achieve these goals without compromising on high standards of occupant comfort. The latter include springs and dampers, wheels and tyres, yaw control systems, such as the E-Diff, traction control (F1-Trac), Stability Control (ESC), and auxiliary braking systems, such as ABS/EBD, which work in coordination to transfer torque in the most intelligent and efficient way possible to get the most out of the performance available.

The new carbon-ceramic braking system (CCM3) benefits from the latest developments, including a new material mix for the rear pads and an optimised cooling system derived from Ferrari's F1 experience, along with the Active Brake Cooling at the front. Combined, these improvements eliminate fade and deliver excellent stopping distances (131 m from 200 km/h, an impressive 7-metre improvement on the 599 GTB Fiorano).

The Ferrari F12berlinetta features traditional double wishbone suspension with lower L-arm at the front and multi-link at the rear. It also sports the new SCM-E magnetorheological dampers which have twin solenoids and a new ECU with upgraded software. The system uses a fluid whose viscosity is altered by an electronically-controlled magnetic field generated inside the damper. This in turn translates into faster response times and more precise bump control which improves both performance and ride comfort. The F12berlinetta thus has faster acceleration than any other road-going Ferrari. Benchmark performance is marche by outstanding driver involvement courtesy of later braking, quicker turn-in, higher entry speeds and greater lateral acceleration through bends. The car requie less steering input at the wheel during cornering, there is better traction accelerating out of bends and braking distances are drastically reduced too.



ENGINE & DRIVETRAIN







Okay, while the F12berlinetta is a gorgeous piece of art inside and out, we need to have a look at what makes a supercar really super. In other words, we need to see what’s moving this machine. Under the hood, you have a 6,262 cc, 65-degree V-12 engine fed by a 200-bar (2,900 psi) direct-injection system. Putting that into perspective, the direct injection system in the F12berlinetta produces 57 times the pressure of your standard fuel-injection system.

This allows this naturally-aspirated engine to pump out 740 CV (729 horsepower) at 8,250 rpm, which equals out to 118 CV (116 horsepower) per liter. Horsepower is not the only thing that you need to take into account when looking at a supercar, as torque is what gets this beast moving in the first place and the F12berlinetta has plenty. It produces a face-shifting 690 Nm (508 pound-feet) of torque at 6,000 rpm and 552 Nm (406 pound-feet) of that is available from 2,500 rpm

Ferrari balanced out the F12berlinetta’s engine perfectly and kept its rolling resistance low, so that it can reach its peak engine speeds in rapid for. This is an oft-overlooked benefit, as what’s the point of having massive amounts of horsepower, when you can barely get the heavy engine components spinning fast enough to reach the peak power?

To boot, Ferrari also put an added focus on fuel economy and emissions, by increasing the V-12’s combined fuel economy to 15 liters per 100 km (15 mpg) and bringing its emissions down to 350 grams per kilometer. While neither specification is stellar when compared to the average cars of the world, those are very impressive in the supercar world.

This masterfully crafted engine connects to an F1-style transmission, which tosses power to the rear wheels. This transmission is a dual-clutch variety that instantaneously switches gears, thus eliminating the need for you to row your own gears.

This dual-clutch 7-speed transmission is specially tuned to handle the engine’s power and driving characteristics. To add a little extra to the pot, Ferrari added in its electronic E-diff which helps reduce the overall weight of the driveline.

This perfect marriage of power and efficiency is enough to get the F12berlinetta to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.1 seconds, dropping it in at 60 mph in just about 3 seconds flat. It can also reach 200 km/h (124 mph) in only 8.5 seconds. It also gives the F12 a top speed of over 211 mph.

Overall, we have some real impressive numbers from the F12berlinetta, but we need to get a good look at the platform this stellar car rides on to make sure it can actually handle all of this power.


CHASSIS & SUSPENSION



So we know that the F12berlinetta can go fast, looks style, and is a relatively comfortable car, but how does it handle? Being a front-engine, rear-drive car immediately puts the F12berlinetta at a disadvantage, but Ferrari worked hard to overcome that downfall. Its traditional double-wishbone suspension with lower L-arm is pretty common in the supercar world, and the multi-link suspension on the rear is common throughout the automotive world. Where Ferrari made its mark is in its new SCM-E magnetetorheological dampers.

This SCM-E system uses fluid that is altered by an electronically controlled magnetic field inside its bump damper. This allows the F12berlinetta to quickly adjust the dampers for the specific situation you are in. If you are driving at slow speeds and encountering a lot of bumps, the dampers soften, allowing you to have a more comfortable ride. If you suddenly have to make a quick maneuver or are driving at a high rate of speed, the dampers stiffen, giving you quicker response.

 With its lighter body and shorter wheelbase, you can also come into a turn much faster than its heavier predecessor and exit out of the turn at heavier throttle. To help you in the twist, Ferrari Ferrari also fitted the F12berlinetta with an E-Diff, F1-Trac traction control, electronic stability control, yaw control, ABS, EBD, and 255/35ZR20 tires on the front and 315/35ZR20 tires on the rear. You can even switch over to 305/35ZR20 tires in the winter time and add on a set of chains – yeah, a Ferrari with snow chains, what an image.

The F12berlinetta also boasts an all-new carbon-ceramic braking system (CCM3). This includes all new material mix on the rear ads and an electronically controlled cooling system for the fronts. The front rotors measure in at 15.7 inches and the rears measure in at 14.2 inches, giving the F12berlinetta a 131-meter (429 foot) stopping distance from 200 km/h (124 mph), a 7-meter stopping advantage over the 599 GTB.

Lastly, Ferrari worked on making the entire structure of the F12berlinetta 20 percent stronger and rigid than the 599 GTB, using its careful blends of aluminum alloys – some of which are being used on a car for the first time ever. This helps keep the body from twisting in the corner, keeping it firmly planted on the road.

Overall, this Ferrari is built like a racecar with street car comfort, and the suspension certainly ties it all together. We are still awaiting some official testing results on the slalom and the skid pad, but we are certain it will perform admirably.

2014 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

The new 2014 edition Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has arrived, and the combination of practicality and prestige won’t disappoint.

The rejuvenated new Prado line-up features a new exterior design, significant spec upgrades and an entirely new model – the Prado VX 4.0-litre V6 petrol. Prado hallmarks that have ensured it a loyal following from families, adventurers and business owners through four generations are retained: a luxurious seven-seat interior, ample power and the reassurance of proven off-road performance.

Toyota New Zealand General Manager of Product Planning, Neeraj Lala says, “Prado enjoys a proven heritage within the SUV segment that we’re immensely proud of. It’s a nameplate supported by a loyal audience, because it enjoys such broad appeal.

“With features like seven seats, a highly effective four-wheel drive system and technology such as Trailer Sway Control software added to all models, as well as a fantastic JBL Premium Audio and Navigation package as standard in the range-topping VX Limited, the new Prado offers a rock-solid blend of practicality and prestige.”

Up front, Prado's newly refreshed nose draws on several structural elements from its unique design heritage. A further evolution of the classic Prado grille that accentuates the SUV's rugged appearance is framed by new, modern headlight clusters featuring Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) on all models.

Similarly at the rear, new tail light clusters debut on the 2014 model. And for the entry-level Prado GX, the spare wheel has been moved from the rear door to under the boot floor, in line with other iterations in the range.

Active family and business users who have long enjoyed the lifestyle solution Prado offers will find a comprehensive model range available for 2014, powered by both 3.0-litre turbo diesel and 4.0-litre petrol V6 engines.

Enhancements to the new Prado begin with entry-level GX, which boasts privacy glass and roof rails as standard for the first time, taking it far beyond expectations of an entry-level model. All models receive new alloy wheel designs and four new exterior colours are available to choose from.

Adding to Prado’s standard safety features, the 2014 model introduces Trailer Sway Control software which assists the driver in retaining control if the system senses a dangerous situation is occurring when towing. An Emergency Stop Signal system, also included as standard, flashes the brake lights under hard braking to alert following traffic of a potential incident.

All models feature a reversing camera, while VX and VX Limited arrive with a four-camera Multi-terrain Monitor system. VX Limited also receives a Blind Spot Monitor system as standard.

Inside, Prado retains a premium feel, with superior levels of comfort, space and technology present throughout the four model range. Interior specification has been enhanced in all grades, with new switchgear and instrumentation, along with new fabrics and interior colour schemes that add luxury to this spacious, rugged SUV.

Rear seat passengers in Prado VX and VX Limited will find touches of luxury in the form of heated seats, separate air conditioning controls and – for VX Limited passengers – a rear seat entertainment system to make the miles melt away on any long trip.

Across the entire range access to third row seats has also improved, with a walk-in mechanism allowing access without tumbling the second row. A slide mechanism also enables the second row to move back for more legroom when the third row isn’t in use, and the third row can be stowed both from inside the vehicle and from the back door – convenient when stowing luggage.

VX 4WD 3.0-litre turbo diesel and VX 4WD 4.0-litre petrol V6 owners will have the option of upgrading to a JBL Premium Audio and Navigation package. This high-end system is also capable of receiving SUNA Live Traffic Management GPS updates, meaning the driver has the potential to receive live updates on traffic congestion and, thanks to SUNA data, time-saving alternative route information. The JBL Premium Audio and Navigation package is standard on the top grade Prado VX Limited.
As always, the Land Cruiser Prado’s four-wheel drive capabilities are second to none with a TORSEN type LSD centre differential with centre differential lock, Hill-start Assist Control, Downhill Assist Control and Active Traction Control as standard.

Prado VX adds the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which aids performance both on and off road, while VX Limited adds further four wheel drive technology, including rear air suspension, Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and Multi-Terrain ABS.

VX Limited also now boasts an electric rear differential lock, Multi-terrain Select and CRAWL Control: standard features previously only available as options that underline Prado’s comprehensive ability to get off the beaten track when required.

EXTERIOR















The exterior design of successive Land Cruiser generations has combined the stylish aesthetics of a vehicle entirely at home in any environment with the robust image of durability and power expected from a genuine four-wheel drive machine.

The face of the new Land Cruiser draws on several structural elements from this unique design heritage. It combines a high-positioned face, an integrated headlamp and radiator grille structure and a vertical, two-step construction to reinforce the Toyota 4x4's toughness, reliability and outstanding off-road performance.

The newly designed radiator grille and rectilinear headlamp clusters have been integrated into a single, more powerful-looking structure, which has been positioned higher to offer increased component protection during off-road driving.

A further evolution of the classic Land Cruiser grille, the thick metallic plated structure of the new grille features five powerfully projecting vertical bars which sink directly into the front bumper, giving the perception of a larger grille and a thicker front bumper to accentuate the new Toyota's rugged appearance.

The bars feature three different, grade-dependent finishes: black (Entry), metallic plating (Legend), or a combination of metallic plating and silver paint (Prestige and Executive).

Integrating high and low beams, a front turn signal lamp and Daytime Running Lights (DRL) within a distinctive new casing, the headlamp clusters may be equipped with either halogen or LED headlamps, the latter incorporating LED DRL. Further strengthening the visual identity of the new Land Cruiser, the lamp casing interior is finished in powder-coated aluminium and black, and features 'Land Cruiser' badging above the turn signal lamp.

Incorporating new, integral fog lamps, the vertical, two-step construction of the new, over-sized front bumper design offers improved protection to the radiator grille and headlamps. Reinforcing the Toyota Land Cruiser's broad, powerful stance and go-anywhere credentials, the sharply trimmed lower section minimises the effect of the front overhang on the vehicle's off-road driving approach angle.

To the rear, new lamp clusters feature solid, clear lens blocks inset within a red-accented, powerfully three-dimensional design. As with the headlamps, the 'Land Cruiser' logo is integrated within the lamp casing.

A new, more three-dimensional license plate garnish has been widened to overlap the license plate panel. It features shaved ends to emphasise the solid, sculpted block nature of the garnish, reinforcing the new Toyota 4x4's rugged, powerful design language.
The vehicle profile is enhanced by newly designed 17" 6-spoke and 18" 12-spoke wheels, the former also available in steel.

The new Land Cruiser is available in a choice of ten body colours, including four new to the model range: Attitude Black Mica, Bronze Mica Metallic, Dark Green Mica and Dark Blue Mica.



INTERIOR














While it remains a tough, go-anywhere off-roader in the long tradition of its name, the Land Cruiser is also a first class on-road vehicle which sets high standards for interior quality, comfort, flexibility, convenience and state-of-the-art technology.

The new Land Cruiser features a comprehensive interior design upgrade. It includes a new centre console upper panel, a new off- and on-road driving control switch panel, a new Optitron meter design incorporating a new 4.2" colour TFT multi-information display, enhanced dashboard and door trim and ornamentation, improved second and third row seat designs with new fabrics, and new interior colour schemes.

The robust, functional geometric dashboard design features a strong horizontal form penetrated by a prominent vertical centre console. Within the upper console, a new, brushed metal audio control panel has been located above the 7" full-colour display, accentuating the strongly three-dimensional nature of the design. Below the automatic air conditioning controls, a new switch panel offers comprehensive control of the new Land Cruiser's off- and on-road driving technology.

Central to this panel, a new, switchable dial offers simple, intuitive control of both the Multi-terrain Select system and Crawl Control speed adjustment. The dial features a knurled finish and both ring and pointer illumination for maximum clarity and useability under even extreme off-road driving conditions.

The 4WD and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system switches located either side of the new dial also feature knurling and pointer illumination, whilst the air suspension, Multi-terrain Select, Crawl Control, centre and rear differential locking switches now incorporate chrome-plated separators for enhanced visibility and ease of use.

Similarly, a revised driver's instrument binnacle incorporating new Optitron meters and a new multi-information display has been designed for maximum clarity under all working conditions. The new Optitron tachometer and speedometer combine a more three-dimensional design with new, thinner dial needles and blue illumination around the dial edges.

Located between the meters, a new 4.2" colour Thin Film Transistor (TFT) multi-information display operates in conjunction with the steering wheel-mounted multi-information switch to support the driver with a comprehensive range of vehicle information.

Fully described in the Driving Performance section, enhanced off-road driving assistance is provided by the addition of new angle gauge, traction control operation at each wheel and differential lock operation screens. In addition, the multi-information screen also features new headlamp levelling, LED headlamp, tire pressure warning, blind spot monitor and traction control OFF indicators.

Dashboard and door trim and ornamentation have been comprehensively upgraded to enhance both tactility and perceived quality. The dashboard, centre console, gear lever, steering wheel, door panels and console rear end panel feature a combination of piano black and wood grain finishes, whilst the meter rings, air conditioning panel dials, audio control panel, steering wheel ornamentation and air vent surrounds are highlighted in an aluminium finish, the latter with chrome plated knobs.

The forward folding angle of the second row seats has been increased from 33.8 degrees to 46 degrees, improving ease of entry and exit for third row seat users. Seat heating is now available for the outside second row seats, offering independent operation with two temperature levels.

The appearance of both the second and third row seats has been enhanced by the addition of double outer stitching in models equipped with Premium fabric and leather upholstery. Leather upholstery features contrast colour stitching for a more luxurious appearance.

And an automatic interior illumination off function has been added to prevent battery drain. Interior illumination is automatically turned off 20 minutes after the ignition has been turned off, regardless of the switch position or the doors being opened or closed.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser is available with a choice of two new interior colour schemes: Black and Ivory.



OFF-ROAD DRIVING PERFORMANCE



With over 60 years of heritage and a reputation as one of the world's toughest and most reliable 4x4s, the Toyota Land Cruiser does not compromise in the field of off-road ability.

Unlike rival, monocoque SUVs, much of its legendary off-road toughness may be attributed to the Land Cruiser's robust, highly durable body-on-frame construction, which can withstand the higher forces inherent in harsh off-road use without suffering permanent deformations.

In conjunction with this uniquely rugged construction, the Land Cruiser features a wealth of advanced technologies that improve the vehicle's usability over even the most challenging terrain, assisting the driver and contributing to occupant safety, regardless of driver ability.

A new switch panel offers drivers easier, more intuitive control of the new Land Cruiser's off-road systems, and a new multi-information screen provides significantly enhanced off-road driving assistance.

The new Land Cruiser combines even greater off-road capability with superior on-road driving pleasure and the highest standards of quality and comfort. Revisions to both the standard suspension and the electronically modulated Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) have improved handling stability and ride comfort.

A further significant advantage of the vehicle's ladder frame construction is that it allows noise and vibration from the engine, drivetrain and road to be absorbed directly by the frame, significantly reducing the amount of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) entering the cabin. To that end, the Toyota Land Cruiser's frame-to-body mounts are packed with insulating rubber to absorb NVH and further enhance ride comfort.

The new Land Cruiser is available with a choice of two engines: a 4.0 litre V6 petrol engine or a 3.0 litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel. As a result of various modifications, the 3.0 litre diesel unit now complies with EURO 5+ emissions regulations.



NEW FEATURES






GX gains a rear view camera, new 17-inch six-spoke alloy wheels, audio controls on the steering wheel and a new six-speaker display audio system. GXL gets a new six-speaker display audio, new 17-inch alloy wheels, plus heated and power-retractable exterior mirrors.

VX gets new 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and daytime running lights, radar cruise control, blind zone warning, and an updated KDSS system (which adjusts the suspension to better clamber of obstacles). Inside, the VX gains a new touch-screen 17-speaker JBL premium multimedia audio system and digital radio, and heated second-row seats.

Kakadu gains rear different lock, radar cruise control, blind zone warning, and a nine-inch Blue-ray screen with three wireless headphones.



TECHNOLOGY







But, as before, most of the heavy-duty four-wheel-drive hardware (suspension and rear diff lock) and technology (hill crawl modes and a front view camera) are only available on the most expensive models -- the dearest of which stretches beyond $90,000 -- which buyers are presumably loathe to scratch, let alone take off-road.

The 4.0-litre V6 petrol and 3.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engines are unchanged from before, but are among the most frugal in the large 4WD class (11.5L/100km petrol, 8.5L/100km diesel).



SUSPENSION



The new Land Cruiser benefits from a revised front independent double wishbone and rear four-link with lateral rod suspension. The shock absorber oil seal construction and damping force have been optimised to help ensure reliability whilst improving handling stability and ride comfort.

The new Land Cruiser may also be equipped with an extensively revised electronically modulated Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which optimises the effect of the front and rear stabilisers for enhanced performance both on- and off-road.

The front cylinder rod diameter, rear cylinder piston diameter, front stabiliser bar diameter and thickness, front stabiliser bush inner diameter, front lower arm stabiliser bracket thickness and frame KDSS bracket thickness have all been optimised, realising a more gentle vehicle behaviour, revising the front/rear weight transfer whilst cornering, and promoting excellent handling stability and ride comfort.

The new Land Cruiser further benefits from an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system which allows the driver to fine tune the vehicle's ride characteristics with a choice of 'Normal', 'Comfort' and 'Sport' settings.

Operating in conjunction with AVS, an electronically modulated rear air suspension features five control modes - including an Auto Levelling function and a switchable Height Control function- to maintain optimum control of the rear four-link with lateral rod suspension regardless of occupant numbers or payload.



OFF-ROAD PERFORMANCE




Off road, KDSS virtually disconnects both front and rear stabiliser bars, further enhancing the Toyota Land Cruiser's outstanding wheel articulation to ensure ground contact for all tyres over even the most severe terrain. And both AVS and the electronically modulated rear air suspension systems feature bespoke, off-road settings to maximise the vehicle's all-terrain abilities.

The Land Cruiser's proven, permanent four-wheel drive, two-motor transfer system employs a Torsen Limited Slip Differential (LSD) in the centre differential. It is capable of automatically varying torque distribution between the front and rear wheels from 50:50 to approximately 30:70, in order to provide optimum torque distribution for any given scenario. In addition, the rear differential may be locked to maximise the vehicle's off-road capabilities.

Further enhancing the Land Cruiser's permanent four-wheel drive technology, an Active Traction Control system (A-TRC) uses both brake and engine control to distribute torque appropriately to all four wheels.

Available on all models with five-speed automatic transmission a Multi-terrain Select system (MTS) offers drivers a choice of five terrain modes: Mud & Sand, Loose Rock, Mogul, Rock and Dirt & Rock. The system automatically modifies the vehicle's throttle, braking and traction control systems to suit the off-road conditions, providing the driver with optimum traction and vehicle control for any given scenario.

Offering a choice of five speed settings, Crawl Control automatically controls the engine and brakes to maintain a set vehicle speed, helping the driver slowly descent or ascend slopes at a walking pace, or free the vehicle when stuck, without the need to touch the pedals.



OFF-ROAD DRIVER ASSISTANCE



Both control of these diverse systems and monitoring of the vehicle's off-road performance have been made easier, faster and more comprehensive by the installation of a new centre console control panel and the addition of a new multi-information screen.

Central to the new panel, a switchable dial offers control of both the Multi-terrain Select system and Crawl Control speed adjustment. The panel further incorporates 4WD, AVS, MTS and Crawl Control, and centre and rear differential locking switches, offering drivers complete control of all the Land Cruiser's off-road systems via one intuitive, simple-to-operate panel.

Located between the new Optitron meters in the driver's instrument binnacle, a new 4.2" colour Thin Film Transistor (TFT) multi-information display operates in conjunction with the steering wheel-mounted multi-information switch to provide the driver with a comprehensive range of vehicle information. This includes MTS mode and prompting, vehicle suspension height and off-road system operation in real time.

Enhanced off-road driving assistance is provided by the addition of new angle gauge, traction control operation at each wheel and differential lock operation screens. Information regarding individual wheel traction control, steering angle and differential lock operation can now be displayed simultaneously, significantly enhancing driver assistance during challenging off-road conditions.

When MTS begins operation, a Multi-terrain Monitor will automatically display the view ahead of the vehicle on the 7" centre console display screen. Using front, front and rear side, and rear cameras, the system features a versatile display mode capable of showing either independent or combined, front, side and rear views.

The Multi-terrain Monitor also displays a comprehensive range of additional information, including the view range of the cameras, the locations of obstacles detected by the clearance sonar, steering linked guide lines which predict the path of the front tyres, vehicle width and length parallel lines, and the position of the front and rear tyre contact patches.



ENGINE & TRANSMISSION




5-door versions of the new Toyota Land Cruiser are available with a choice of two engines: a 4.0 litre V6 petrol engine or a 3.0 litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel. All 3-door versions are equipped with the 3.0 litre turbodiesel.

The petrol V6 is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, whilst the diesel unit may be equipped with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission.

The 2,982 cc, 16 valve, DOHC four-cylinder common rail turbodiesel is renowned for its strong, instantaneous delivery of the low-end torque essential for off-road driving performance. The unit has now been upgraded to make it Euro 5+ compliant.

The engine develops 140 kW / 190 DIN hp at 3,400 rpm and 420 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 3,000 rpm. Mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, it will accelerate the new 3-door Toyota Land Cruiser from 0-100 km/h in 10.2 seconds (10.6 with manual transmission) and on to a top speed of 175 km/h. CO2 emissions are 209 g/km (214 M/T), and the turbodiesel returns 7.9 l/100 km (8.1 M/T) in the combined cycle.

The new 5-door Land Cruiser will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 11.0 seconds (11.4 M/T) and on to a top speed of 175 km/h. CO2 emissions are 213 g/km (217 M/T), and combined fuel consumption 8.1 l/100 km (8.2 M/T).

The petrol engine is a lightweight, 3,956 cc, 24 valve, chain-driven DOHC, direct injection V6 with Dual VVT-i. It develops 207 kW / 282 DIN hp at 5,600 rpm and 385 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm, offering 0-100 km/h acceleration in 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h. It generates CO2 emissions of 256 g/km, and the V6 returns 10.8 l/100 km in the combined cycle.




SAFETY






The new Land Cruiser is equipped with one of the most comprehensive, technically advanced ranges of active and passive, on- and off-road safety features ever launched by Toyota.

In addition to a sophisticated Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) system that can help reduce collision damage and injury, it features the full range of braking, traction control and stability systems on the market today: ABS, complete with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system.

Moreover, the Toyota Land Cruiser is equipped with several brake control systems specifically tailored to enhancing its off-road performance and ease of use in even the most taxing terrain: Hill-start Assist Control and Down-hill Assist Control, a Multi-terrain ABS function and Active Traction Control (A-TRC).

Both safety and driver convenience are further enhanced by the availability of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Back and Clearance sonar, a Tyre Pressure Warning system, Trailer Sway Control, a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and a new Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system.

The RCTA system employs the BSM radar to alert the driver backing out of a parking space to approaching vehicles which may not be visible in either the rear view monitor or door mirrors. When approaching vehicles are detected, the system flashes the indicator lights on the door mirrors and also sounds a warning buzzer.

New Grade Structure with Enhanced Standard Equipment Specification

Both three and five door versions of the new Land Cruiser are now available in an expanded, four grade range: a new Entry grade, Legend, Prestige and top-of-the-range Executive.

All four grades feature an enhanced standard equipment specification, and an upgraded options list.



MULTIMEDIA SYSTEM


The New Land Cruiser benefits from Toyota's unique range of affordable, touch-screen multimedia equipment; Toyota Touch 2 and the Toyota Touch 2 with Go navigation system.

Toyota Touch 2 is a 7 inch, full colour, touch-screen interface which represents a new approach to affordable, on-board multimedia systems.

The upgraded Toyota Touch 2 features a 800 x 480 resolution WVGA screen. The screen design has been revised for clarity, and now features mirror link mobile phone compatibility and slide operation for ease of use.

Now available in 20 languages, the Toyota Touch 2 is also equipped with an upgraded multimedia base unit with the addition of an SMS on-screen send/receive function incorporating a contact person image display.

The system incorporates AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity with a music streaming facility, and a USB port for the connection of portable music players, with the facility to display iPod album cover art. A rear view camera is fitted as standard.

Toyota Touch 2 with Go builds on the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia base unit, offering customers an enhanced, full map navigation system representing the best value for money on the market. The system was developed in Europe, with European customers in mind.

It includes all the most popular navigation functions, such as advanced traffic coverage, customisable speed limits, speed camera warnings, motorway signposting, automatic zoom and junction view at motorway intersections.

Using a compatible mobile phone, via Bluetooth, the system offers on-board connectivity to Google Places - the largest and most up-to-date search database in the world. Via Google Maps, destinations may be input remotely from home or office, and Points of Interest may be downloaded for entry as destinations.

The upgraded Toyota Touch 2 with Go system further features a new map screen design, improved navigation data, better voice guidance, traffic visualisation, an SOS/emergency call assistance function and access to the on-line Toyota customer portal.

Further system access to online content and apps includes a Touch 2 with Go Apps function which offers several applications available for download, including fuel prices, weather and parking space information, and a new Twitter App.

Toyota Touch 2 with Go has been designed specifically to be both affordable and flexible. The system can be easily upgraded with the newest functions, updated maps and the latest Apps, as they become available.
