2017 Audi S5 - Review

► BASE PRICE :

2017 AUDI S5 - $53,100

The S5 recently received a mid-cycle update that included more angular headlights, a "singleframe" grille and a more aggressive front fascia. Taken together, the styling changes added more visual pop to the S5's already eye-catching form.

Power continues to come from a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft. Buyers have the choice of a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, both of which send power to all four wheels via Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The 0-to-60 mph sprint comes in a claimed 4.9 seconds, and fuel economy is rated at 17/26 for the manual and 18/28 for the automatic.

As with all of Audi's "S" models, the S5 features a full complement of suspension and interior modifications designed to impart a more sporting look and feel. Larger brakes and a tightened and lowered suspension help the Z-rated tires deliver the uprated power to the street. The coddling interior features carbon fiber trim, special seats and a unique steering wheel.

Available equipment includes Audi'a MMI infotainment interface and Audi Connect, which brings in-car internet connectivity and industry-first Google Earth integration - complete with panoramic views and high-resolution 3D satellite and aerial imagery.( SEE ALL PHOTOS )

EXTERIOR

The new Audi S5 Coupé spans a length of 4,692 millimeters (15.4 ft). It is 1,846 millimeters (6.1 ft) wide and 1,371 millimeters (4.5 ft) high. The long wheelbase of 2,764 millimeters (9.1 ft) emphasizes the dynamic silhouette of the two-door sports coupé.

The intelligent combination of materials makes the body very torsionally stiff, safe and lightweight. The new Audi S5 Coupé with standard quattro all-wheel drive weights 1,615 kilograms (3,560.5 lb), 60 kilograms (132.3 lb) less than the previous model.

Audi equips the new S5 Coupé standard with LED headlights. The lower edge of the wide and flat Singleframe extends much farther upward than in the previous model. The striking bumper is expressively shaped. The flat air inlet below is adorned by a matt aluminum silver trim strip and spans the entire width of the vehicle. The side air inlets have bold edges and honeycomb grilles in matt titanium black as well as vertical bars evoking the blades of a racing car. At the front end, the new Audi S5 Coupé expresses its independence with additional sporty details, such as the S-specific radiator grille in matt twilight gray with double slats in matt aluminum silver.

When viewed from the side, the new Audi S5 Coupé exhibits a characteristic, wave-shaped shoulder line. The sweeping line with pronounced bulges over the wheel arches is a visual cue to the quattro all-wheel drive. At the transition from the front wheel arch to the A-pillar, a three-dimensional trim element in matt aluminum silver with an integrated S5 logo underscores the supreme sportiness of the new Audi S5 Coupé. As with a racing car, the aluminum-look exterior mirrors are mounted on the top shoulders. Chrome inserts for the door handles and powerfully contoured sill trims in the body color with textured black sill top strips also contributed to the honed exterior.

The rear end sports slim LED rear lights with dynamic turn signals. A distinctive spoiler in the body color on the luggage compartment lid improves the aerodynamics. Integrated into the boldly shaped rear bumper is a flat, black honeycomb grille. The matt twilight gray diffuser with vertical struts and a matt aluminum silver clasp frame the two dual chrome tailpipes.

The three-dimensional trim elements on the flanks, the radiator grille and the luggage compartment lid bear S5 logos with a red rhombus. The 11-shade color palette includes two new colors exclusive to the S model: Navarra blue and Misano red.( SEE ALL PHOTOS )

INTERIOR

The new Audi S5 Coupé also features cultivated sportiness in the interior. The clean design with its strong horizontal orientation makes the spaciously designed interior - which seats four - appear even larger. With a volume of 465 liters (16.4 cu ft) the luggage compartment of the S5 Coupé offers everyday practicality.

A broadly extended band of air vents, an elegant air conditioning panel and a large decorative surface define the instrument panel layout. The Audi MMI display welcomes the driver and passengers with a screen featuring the S5 logo. At night, LED light guides trace the contours of the doors and the center console - in 30 colors with the optional ambient light package. The illuminated door sill strips, the three-spoke sport leather steering wheel with multifunction plus and the chrome clasp on the tiptronic selector lever bear the S logo with a red rhombus (as do the welcome screens of the color DIS or Audi virtual cockpit and the MMI display.

Thanks to the vehicle's excellent aeroacoustics, the interior noise level is exceptionally low. The workmanship quality is on the high level that distinguishes an Audi. As is typical for an S model, the color black dominates. For example on the headlining and the instrument panel. The decorative inlays provide elegant contrasts. They come standard in matt brushed aluminum, with options for carbon Atlas, gray natural oak and black piano finish.

The optional S sport seats have integrated head restraints, adjustable bolsters and a pneumatic massage function. Fine Nappa leather in the colors black, rotor gray or magma red with diamond pattern, contrasting stitching and an S badge is the standard upholstery. ( SEE ALL PHOTOS )

PERFORMANCE & STYLING

The look of the Audi S5 is still attractive, but it's no longer fresh. For the past six years or so, the A5 and S5 family has been a design benchmark for luxury coupes, so it's no surprise that many of its cues and themes have appeared in newer models.

That's however also a testament to how well the S5's design works. It has classic rear-wheel-drive luxury-coupe proportions (even though it's all-wheel drive), and the flowing, sculpted design is brought to its best (but not over the top) with accent trim, some blacked-out details, and special available Black Optic 21-inch wheels. Inside, the switchgear can seem a bit excessive or cluttered, yet all of the materials and finishes still live and breathe quality, sportiness, and performance.

Both sporty S5 variants are offered in coupe and Cabriolet (convertible) form. The standard engine on the S5 is the 3.0T supercharged V-6, rated at 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration is just 4.9 seconds to 60 mph for the S5 Coupe, and 5.1 seconds for the S5 Cabriolet.

Handling is excellent for both of these models, although the steering is a bit too far on the numb and artificially weighted side. An Audi Drive Select system lets the driver select modes that include individual settings for the steering, transmission, and throttle (plus those of the available adaptive damping suspension).

The S5 especially manages to straddle two worlds, of entirely comfort-oriented models and those aimed for higher-performance pegs. From the driver's seat it's a versatile, spirited touring car—one that's especially nimble and capable. The quattro all-wheel-drive system aids this, starting with a power split that sends 60 percent of the power split to the rear wheels—which helps with handling yet allows all-weather ability. Brakes are strong, and the 3.0T engine sounds great.

This year's S5 Coupe was rated by the EPA at 18 mpg city, 28 highway, 21 combined with the automatic, 17/26/20 mpg with the manual. The S5 Cabriolet, which is only available with the automatic, was rated at 18/26/21 mpg.( SEE ALL PHOTOS )

ENGINE

It's a good day when the "base" engine is the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that's standard in the Audi A5. With 220 smooth horsepower, standard quattro AWD, and your choice of a 6-speed automatic or an 8-speed automatic with Tiptronic manual control, it's no penalty box. However, we're particularly fond of the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 in the Audi S5, with its 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. ( SEE ALL PHOTOS )

 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4
220 horsepower @ 4,450-6,000 rpm
258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500-4,300 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/32 mpg (manual), 22/30 mpg (automatic)

 3.0-liter supercharged V6
333 horsepower @ 5,500-6,500 rpm
325 lb-ft of torque @ 2,900-5,300 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/26 mpg (manual), 18/28 mpg (Coupe, S tronic automatic), 18/26 mpg (Cabriolet, S tronic automatic)

SAFETY

Standard safety features for the 2017 Audi S5 include antilock brakes, stability/traction control, front-seat side and knee airbags, and (in the coupe) full-length side curtain airbags. A blind-spot monitoring system, a rearview camera, and front and rear parking sensors are included in the Technology package

In Edmunds brake testing, the S5 coupe and convertible came to a stop from 60 mph within a foot of each other at 108 and 109 feet, respectively. These distances are comparable to those of competing vehicles with summer performance tires.( SEE ALL PHOTOS )

Is ABS in vehicles usefull on roads ?

An anti-lock braking system or anti-skid braking system (ABS) is an automobile safety system that allows the wheels on a motor vehicle to maintain tractive contact with the road surface according to driver inputs while braking, preventing the wheels from locking up (ceasing rotation) and avoiding uncontrolled skidding. It is an automated system that uses the principles of threshold braking and cadence braking which were practiced by skillful drivers with previous generation braking systems. It does this at a much faster rate and with better control than many drivers could manage.

► Why ABS is Important ?

For some people, skidding and sliding on the road is supposed to be fun. This is especially true for racers, and more so for drifters. But for all other “normal” people, wheels locking up on the road is a very bad thing. Because:

► You are not using the full braking potential of the tires, so braking distance will increase substantially.
► You will most likely lose some, if not all control of your vehicle when the wheels lock up.
► Your tires will wear out much more quickly.
Let me share with you a practical example of how useful ABS can be in real life.

During my recent 4000 km trip around India on my Duke 390, there were quite a number of occasions where I had to panic brake from 120-140 kmph down to a dead stop, and quite quickly. Like when I was going from Kota to Indore, a stray dog suddenly came in front of my bike and I could do nothing but push both the front and rear brake with everything I had.

Because my Duke 390 comes equipped with ABS, even braking so hard at such high-speed didn’t cause me to skid and kiss the tarmac. This is extremely important, especially for the crazy road conditions in India. The best part about ABS is that it is sensitive to where you are riding. Like if you are on a stretch with sand and small pebbles, it is much more likely that you will skid easily, so the ABS will start intervening quite heavily. On a good piece of asphalt, you may never even feel it is there. More about ABS & EBD Braking system

► Should you buy an ABS vehicle ?

Absolutely! I can’t even imagine riding a bike now that doesn’t come with ABS, it would be such high stress on my tiny brain. Unfortunately, ABS doesn’t come as standard on almost all vehicles in India. In bikes it is available only on very high-end machines, in cars only on the top variants. I don’t think I would every buy any vehicle again without this sweet piece of tech.

ABS is a true hero in my book, from the outside you can’t even tell it is there, but on the inside it is like your savior angel. Working in the shadows, saving your life and others as well!

► Why is it important to have ABS brakes in cars in India ?

Many new car buyers in India are not willing to pay the extra costs for the option of ABS brakes in the new car they are buying. We want to highlight the importance of ABS brakes and how it can be a life saver in emergency braking situations, especially during the rainy season in India, when the roads are wet.

ABS brakes prevents the car wheels from locking and skidding when braked hard on a slippery road. With ABS brakes you can steer the car with full brakes applied, even on very slippery roads. With ABS brakes the braking distance for a car to come to a full stop is much shorter than if there where no ABS brakes.

Another advantage of ABS brakes is that it increases the life of tyres on Indian roads. When you brake hard a car without ABS Brakes the tyres skid and the area of the tyre in contact with the road gets worn out. Frequent use of hard braking on Indian roads lead to the tyre getting worn out in different areas on the tyre and this leads to the tyre getting out of balance and causing vibrations. Also the life of a tyre in a car with ABS brakes is much longer than on a car without ABS brakes.

► New developments in ABS brakes :

New developments in ABS brakes are 'Electronic Brakeforce Distribution' or EBD, Traction Control System or TCS, Emergency Brake Assist or EBA and Electronic Stability Control or ESC. These are all improvements on the basic ABS breaking system. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution EBD electronically adjusts the break force on each wheel individually to just below the skidding point of that wheel, Emergency Brake Assist EBA assists the driver in applying full force on the brake pedal when he applies brakes in a panic during an emergency. More about ABS & EBD Braking system

2017 Infiniti QX30 - Review

Edited by : Shahen Tharammal

► PRICE :

QX30  2.0L I4 Turbo / FWD  $29,950
QX30 Luxury  2.0L I4 Turbo / FWD  $32,600
QX30 Premium  2.0L I4 Turbo / FWD  $35,300
QX30 Sport  2.0L I4 Turbo / FWD  $38,500
QX30 Luxury AWD  2.0L I4 Turbo / AWD  $34,400
QX30 Premium AWD  2.0L I4 Turbo / AWD  $37,700

Infiniti considers its all-new 2017 QX30 a combination of coupe, hatchback and crossover. The way it straddles these body types can be advantageous. From a driver enjoyment perspective, you will find the QX30 more athletic and better handling than a typical SUV. Compared to a traditional sedan, the QX30's hatchback design gives you greater versatility, both in terms of its taller ride height and increased cargo capacity. Then there's the QX30's coupe-like styling, which helps it look sportier than the typical sedan or crossover. The question you might wonder, though, is whether this extensive blending results in a vehicle that delivers the best of both worlds or is diluted to the point of not excelling at anything.

With an as-new entry cost around $30,000, the compact QX30 acts as an introduction to the Infiniti brand. In this position, it's a lot like rivals such as the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. In fact, the QX30 is heavily based on the GLA-Class and shares the Benz's underlying body structure and powertrain. But Infiniti applied its own suspension and powertrain tuning to give the QX30 a more refined feel of the two. The QX30 has its own interior design as well, which is highlighted by Infiniti's superior InTouch infotainment system. A flat-bottom steering wheel and two-tone, distinctive leather and simulated suede seats are available on Sport models to help further buff out the QX30's appeal.

Keep in mind that it is not all roses. The QX30 is smaller than your typical SUV and isn't as good at carrying cargo and/or rear passengers. And it doesn't ride as smoothly as a sedan. If you're shopping for a QX30, it'd also be worthwhile to check out some primary competition, including the sporty and roomy BMW X1, the handsomely finished Lexus NX 200t and the aforementioned Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. The race is tight, with some differentiation separating one from the next, but we think the new QX30 is right in the mix.

EXTERIOR

The look of the QX30 is obviously pretty similar to that of the Q30, and it is even surprisingly similar to that of the Geneva concept. There were a few of the sorts of changes that you’d expect in turning a concept into a production car, the mirrors are bigger, the wheels are smaller and so forth, but the sheet metal is essentially the same. It is also, obviously, taller than the Q30 hatchback, even if that design is slightly taller than what is usual for its niche. It’s a bold design, with strong creases running down either side, a different sort of look than Infiniti’s other crossovers.

Bold and unique designs are important in the compact crossover segment. Infiniti’s press release is filled with dense marketing nonsense language, but the overall point is still a valid one: the sorts of people who buy compact crossovers don’t want one that just looks like a shrunken version of a brand’s bigger crossovers, they want something unique. Nissan Nissan taught this fact to the automotive world with the Juke, and wisely elected to follow the same path with the QX30. This will be especially useful in a market niche currently dominated by Germans, where shrunken versions of the X5 or the Q5 have been the mainstays.(SEE ALL PHOTOS)

INTERIOR

The design of the QX30’s interior is unique to Infiniti, but you might notice some Mercedes parts if you look closely. These are small things though, like buttons, and even if they aren’t unique, it’s not as though Mercedes makes bad interiors. There is a big 7-inch screen and everything is covered in Nappa leather in your choice of black or beige. This includes leather on the dash, complete with visible stitching on the seams, which really looks surprisingly good.

Infiniti also says the QX30 will have one of the quietest interiors in its segment. That’s quite a boast, and it’ll be interesting to see when the crossover finally hits showrooms. The seats are even said to offer above average support for your back, something that anyone who will be driving a QX30 for long distances is bound to appreciate.(SEE ALL PHOTOS)

STYLING

As a vehicle designed for worldwide sales, the 2017 Infiniti QX30 represents an interesting proposition for the American market. That's because it's essentially a hatchback and U.S. buyers barely tolerate hatchbacks. To combat that perception, Infiniti is marketing the QX30 as a compact crossover SUV.

We give it a 7 for styling, with points for its interesting exterior and interior.

The heavy dose of Franco-Japanese style creates a very attractive vehicle. Its shark-like nose flows rearward to fenders that swell architecturally around massive wheel wells, beneath a low-cut greenhouse, and on to a tail with a steeply sloped rear window. It bears a resemblance to the Mazda3 in a passing glance, but in person it appears as a much more elaborate and upscale design.

Also in its favor, the QX30's lines don't read like an inexpensive hatchback. The long nose, almost Mazda-like in its proportions, and the truncated tail with Infiniti's characteristic reverse-crescent C-pillar, give the QX30 a shape unlike any other. Relatively large alloy wheels sit inside large openings rimmed in black lacquer, giving it an elevated stance that disguises its upright hatchback proportions. Sharply incised accent lines in the doors taper toward each other from the hood and the bottom of the front wheel arches, giving the doors a complex 3-D shape and emphasizing the horizontal proportions. Overall, it's a well-executed shape that's very much an Infiniti to the eye.

It's daring—to be sure—but looks about as good as a hatchback can look. And that may be what it takes to distract American buyers from their usual prejudice.

And then there's ride height. All models, including the Sport, sit higher than conventional hatchbacks, creating the look of a crossover. It's even higher in the QX30 AWD.

The AWD also features a blockier front fascia, roof rails, and flat black fender flares, as well as more space between the wheel arches and the tires due to the raised ride height.

The interior is equally stylish, and defined by a strong asymmetrical element that sweeps across the dashboard. It stops just short of gimmickry, and provides an interesting counterpoint to the businesslike designs in German rivals.(SEE ALL PHOTOS)

DRIVETRAIN

Versatility is also an apt descriptor for the new QX30's advanced powertrain, which delivers a confidence-inspiring, dynamic driving experience aided by available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive.

The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged unit is rated at 208 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, with peak torque of 258 lb-ft available from 1,200 - 4,400 rpm. This engine has been engineered to blend responsive performance with enhanced fuel efficiency. It features a lightweight aluminum block and cylinder head with chain-driven dual-overhead camshafts, die-cast aluminum cylinder crankcase and optimized crank assembly, resulting in further weight savings, reduced friction and improved efficiency. The QX30 also includes an idle stop-start system (ISS) in combination with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The engine was developed in conjunction with Daimler and is sourced from Kolleda, Germany.

All 2017 QX30 models feature a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission system. The dual-clutch intelligently pre-selects gears so the next shift is always ready to go, while manual mode lets the driver control gear changes when desired. Delivering seamless acceleration at any speed and in any gear, the application of torque is almost uninterrupted during gear changes, reducing lurching while in motion and between shifts. Paddle shifters are standard.

The Infiniti QX30's chassis was developed to offer a comfortable ride and confident or both two-wheel and all-wheel drive models. Development teams responsible for QX30's ride and handling worked hard to ensure the car's dynamic characteristics met with buyers' expectations of a vehicle that has been engineered to bridge the gap between compacts and crossovers.

The front suspension is a MacPherson strut design with twin-tube shock absorbers, while the rear utilizes independent multi-link with rear monotube shocks. Stabilizer bars are used front and rear.

Steering is provided by an Electric Power Assisted (EPS) system and braking is a power-assisted 4-wheel disc design with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). QX30 Sport uses cross-drilled front rotors and Infiniti-branded calipers.

The Infiniti QX30 Luxury AWD and QX30 Premium AWD models come equipped with an Infiniti's Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. The drivetrain is able to send up to 50 percent of the engine's power and torque to the rear axle to maintain traction on slippery surfaces and in inclement weather, enhancing a feeling of control and confidence when driving. For example, if wheel slip is detected by sensors, braking is applied to the slipping wheel, while torque is sent to the gripping wheel for additional stability.(SEE ALL PHOTOS)

ENGINE

Regardless of trim level or the number of driven wheels, all versions of the new QX30 share the same Daimler-sourced but Infiniti-tuned powertrain elements also found in the Mercedes-Benz GLA250. While not the most powerful engine in its class, the QX30’s smooth and responsive turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder teams well with the paddle-shiftable 7-speed dual-clutch automatic to deliver spirited acceleration across a fairly wide rev range. A driver-selectable start/stop system further enhances fuel economy, netting 24/33-mpg city/highway EPA marks in front-drive QX30s and 21/30 stats in AWD configuration.

► 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4
208 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm
258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,200-4,000 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 24/33 mpg (FWD), 21/20 mpg (AWD)

SAFETY

The QX30 obviously hasn’t been crash tested yet, and the NHTSA hasn’t published any results for the GLA-Class yet either. But the good news is that there are Euro NCAP results for the GLA, and it was awarded a 5-star rating. There will be a number of electronic driver’s aides as well, although Infiniti Infiniti has been oddly vague about these. We do know that there will be Around View Monitor with moving object detection and Intelligent Parking Assist.

Infiniti has even found a way for the radar for the adaptive cruise control to pass through the badge on the front grille. It’s a small thing, but it eliminates the need to find somewhere in the front fascia to mount it, and nobody is going to argue that it doesn’t look better for it, even if it is just a minor detail.

FUEL ECONOMY

The 2017 Infiniti QX30 is a completely new vehicle, yet it's built with a powertrain already established in the Mercedes-Benz CLA and GLA.

The QX30 comes in a little less fuel efficient than the GLA250, however: In front-wheel drive form, it is rated at 24 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined.

By comparison, the GLA checks in at 25/35/29 mpg, which is noticeably better.

Opt for an all-wheel drive QX30 and you'll see those figures decline to 21/30/25 mpg, per the EPA.

Note: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.
