2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale - Review

PRICE : 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale $291,744

The Ferrari 458 Italia is arguably the best-driving supercar ever built, as well as the most accessible yet capable high-performance car from the Italian sports-car maker. And it's definitely one of the sexiest, wrapping the best of Ferrari's mid-engine, poster-car heritage with just the right gloss and gleam to flaunt all the modern, F1-derived wizardry on board.

There's a replacement in the works for next year; and the 458 is going to be a tough act to follow. In the meantime, with the 458 Spider (convertible), and the 458 Speciale also still relatively new to the lineup, there's lots of appeal in this master work.

And then there's the 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale Spider—officially called the Speciale A (for Aperta, roughly meaning 'open'). As the eagerly anticipated variant that combines the Speciale's higher-output V-8 (597 hp), with the Spider's surprisingly well executed retractable hardtop, it looks like one that will appeal even to those with multiple prancing horses in the garage. The Speciale A has a limited production run of just 499 units.

The 458 Speciale emphasizes the importance of performance by trimming weight and tweaking the exterior for greater aerodynamic efficiency, while tuning up the suspension, control electronics, and tire grip for even more impressive track-day ability.

Both coupe and convertible models of the 458 share a low, aggressive front end with futuristic-looking headlights, a tall, flared rear end that gives the car a muscular stance, and clean, mid-engined proportions that distill the essence of a modern Ferrari performance car. The 458 Italia's interior is modern and luxurious in its look, but not avant garde or striking.

Sitting just behind occupants' heads, the 458's 4.5-liter V-8 engine is rated at 562 horsepower in standard form, and it'll rev all the way up to a 9,000-rpm redline. It makes 80 percent of its peak 400 lb-ft of torque from 3,250 rpm. But the numbers don't tell the full story of the Italia's V-8. It emits a soundtrack that will delight even those who typically shake their head at noisy sports cars.

In sight and sound, and in poise—as well as performance numbers—the 458 Spider is unparalleled among top-down cars. It’s sexy beyond all the usual cliches, yet it’ll be happy to oblige all of them; it looks technical and racing-influenced in all the right ways; with the F1-derived gearbox snapping off clap-shifts when pressed to duty. It's activated by steering-wheel paddle-shifters, and can get a little tricky when parking on inclines—but we think most owners are willing to live with that compromise. What Ferrari 458 Spider owner is parallel-parking themselves, anyway?

The layout is adventurous, cockpit-like, and highly functional and driver-focused, of course. You sit very low; firm bolsters jut forward beside your rib cage (those with stockier builds will find the seats tight). The ‘frunk’ in the 458 Spider is huge—larger than what you’ll find in some Porsche models, and shaped in a way that could allow two carry-on-size suitcases, or several weekend bags.

Only a thin divider separates the engine from the passenger compartment, and that means there's a symphony of mechanical excellence each and every time you fire it up and plant your foot. The presence of the engine transforms the car from a fairly mellow cruiser to a race-bred thrill machine with just a quick stab of the gas.

It's not all about the auditory experience, however. The 458 Italia and 458 Spider also deliver impressive speed and remarkable driver feedback. The coupe hits 60 mph from a stop in just 3.4 seconds (cut down to around 3.0 seconds in the Speciale), and carries on to a top speed of 202 mph. The Spider's slightly less-slick aerodynamics cap it at 198 mph. Both cars use the same Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and both get gas mileage around the 12-mpg mark in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.

The handling, however, is where the Ferrari 458 truly shines. Balance and grip are both evident in large quantities, imbuing a stability not often found in high-horsepower, mid-engine cars. The steering feel is among the very best we've ever experienced, with perfect weight and exquisitely detailed feedback about the road surface and the tires' comfort zones. We found the 458 Spider to be communicative in a way that many modern cars aren’t; you can feel the weight transfer in corners, as you’re easing into the throttle, far more than most other high-power supercars—and long before the tires get to their maximum grip or the electronic systems need to pull their weight.

In all, it's a case of the sum being even greater than its individually excellent parts—and we're anticipating the same for the 2015 458 Spider Speciale.

The 458 family is built with modern engineering and materials to make a rigid, secure chassis. As with most other exotic or low-volume super-performance cars, the 458 Italia hasn't undergone testing by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

A new, higher-power turbocharged engine for this model has also been reported, along with a potential name change.

EXTERIOR

The Ferrari 458 Speciale A's sculpted forms as is the case with all Prancing Horse cars are absolutely performance-oriented.Most of the bodywork panels have been redesigned without modifying either the passenger cell or the signature design features of the car. The composite bumpers have been redesigned and the front bonnet now features two deep air outlets to channel away the air exiting the radiator.

The air outlets to the side of the headlight assemblies now also include three louvers reminiscent of the powerfully sporty Ferraris of the past, such as the 250 GTO and the F40. The rear features a Kamm tail with a full-width grille and twin exhausts.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale A is being premiered in an unusual yellow triple-layer livery with a Nart Blu and Avus white centre stripe. Its new forged five-spoke wheels are available in three colours: Oro, Grigio Corsa and diamond-finish matt black.

INTERIOR

The same thoughts go for the interior. If you have sat inside the 458 Speciale, you have essentially sat inside the spider version as well. The same bare cabin that highlights the focus of the Speciale is still there in all its exposed carbon-fiber glory, and the same squared steering wheel with its myriad of controls sits directly in front of you. There is a yellow stripe in the seats that matches the exterior paint though. I think that is a nice touch.

DESIGN

The 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale and Spider are drastic redesigned compared to the cars that preceded them due to their smooth and curvaceous, wedge shapes. The German aftermarket tuning company took advantage of this and installed a new carbon fiber body kit that improves stability and performance at high speeds. The kit includes a new front lip spoiler and side flics that generate downforce and aid in cooling. A new lightweight and ventilated hood keeps things cool and reduces weight while a set of side skirts sit between the front , rear COR Wheels to optimize drag. At the rear sits new cooling vents to reduce engine temperatures, a carbon fiber lip spoiler, and a new diffuser setup with integrated exhausts.

After the body work was upgraded for better handling and performance, the team got to work on the chassis where components were upgraded to improve all aspects of performance and style. The entire super car was lowered by 20 mm with new sport springs and dampers. A new set of carbon ceramic brakes were installed to provide better stopping power. The last touch was a set of new COR Wheels that feature a matte black finish with Ferrari red highlights and contrasting brushed aluminum hardware.

POWERTRAIN

Punching out 605 cv at 9000 rpm, the Ferrari 458 Speciale A's engine is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever built in Maranello and also sets a new specific power record (135 cv/l) for a road-going power unit of this type. These two figures alone speak volumes about the extraordinary prowess of this 4497 cc mid-rear engine. The work carried out on the car as a whole has also delivered an exceptional weight-to-power ratio of 2.21 kg/cv which results in such unparalleled performance levels as 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 3" (0 to 200 km/h in 9"5) and a Fiorano best lap time of just 1'23"5.

To achieve these results, the 458 Speciale A's combustion, mechanical and volumetric efficiency were all significantly improved with a focus on reaching ambitious targets such as boosting torque at all revs through upping the compression ratio to 14:1, the highest for an engine of this kind.

Clearly, the transfer of Ferrari's Formula 1 expertise and technology was fundamental too. This is true not merely of the design phase but also the production and control processes involved: the engine is the product of the cutting-edge in-house foundry which also casts leading-edge components with extreme structural and dimensional characteristics, exactly as happens with the Scuderia's single-seaters.

Improved combustion chamber fluid-dynamics, new intake geometries and a new cam profile are just some of the modifications that helped the engineers meet their goals. Several components were also reviewed (new materials were adopted for the pistons and con rod bushings) and this too made a significant contribution. Lastly, the crankshaft and intakes systems were also redesigned, with the latter slashing 8 kg off the engine's overall weight.

The soundtrack, both inside and outside the car, is full-bodied and uncompromising too, thanks to the position of the tailpipes, the configuration of the silencers and the redesign of the inlet tract.

TRANSMISSION

I'm a manual transmission junkie, yet this Ferrari's dual-clutch gearbox has started to win me over for all the right reasons. Diving into a corner, the DCT will drop one, two and then three ratios quicker than you can belt out a two-word profanity. Its lightning-quick shifts are much more rapid and smoother than any human could replicate, allowing the driver to flirt with any specific gear for a few fleeting seconds just to extract a couple more miles-per-hour before catching the next cog. For the first time in print, I will call a dual-clutch gearbox in manual mode emotionally rewarding.

AERODYNAMICS

The Ferrari 458 Speciale A's is the most aerodynamically efficient spider in Ferrari history with a coefficient of 1.37, obtained as the result of a series of original and innovative solutions that delivered exceptionally high downforce (Cl 0.485) whilst keeping drag very low (Cd 0.355).

The use of Ferrari-patented active aerodynamics is pivotal too and allows different configurations to be adopted to suit different requirements: maximum downforce when cornering, minimum drag on straights.

There are two vertical flaps on the front of the car plus a horizontal one on the underbody. At relatively low speeds, all of these are closed, channelling air into the radiators to guarantee the necessary cooling for the engine. However, at over 170 km/h, the vertical flaps open, thereby reducing the volume of air reaching the radiators thus cutting drag. At speeds of over 220km/h, however, the horizontal flap lowers to balance downforce between the front and rear axles, leading to a 20 per cent shift in overall downforce towards the rear.

Part of the increase in downforce as well as the 4 per cent shift in the aerodynamic balance over the front are achieved by means of turning vanes at either side of the front bumper which make the most of the lateral sections of the splitters. Aerodynamic fins contribute too.

The front dam creates a separation zone in the air flow immediately after the leading edge of the front splitter while the hump does the same at the start of the flat underbody, reducing pressure on the front of the car.

A rear spoiler with a larger surface area and more pronounced shape has also increased Cl on the rear by 7 points.

Additionally, moving the tailpipes has allowed the diffuser to be redesigned to enhance the extraction capacity of the underbody thereby generating greater downforce across the latter's entirety.

Downforce is boosted still further by the mobile rear flaps which raise and lower as required (raised for more downforce, lowered to minimise drag): electronically controlled, they can be lowered to just 17°, which stalls the diffuser and reduces Cd by 3 points.

PERFORMANCE

Although the 458 Speciale A weighs 110 pounds more than its Coupe counterpart, that extra mass doesn't seem to have impacted the performance potential of this hard-core convertible. Ferrari says it has an identical 3.0-second 0-62 mph sprint time and the firm's trick Side Slip Angle Control system also helps it match the Speciale Coupe's 1-minute 23.5-second clocking around the factory's Fiorano test track. While Ferrari cited no maximum velocity figure for the 458 Speciale A, it's certain to at least approach the 202-mph top-end potential of its hard-shell sibling.

For its Paris coming out party, the 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale A is finished in a unique triple-layer yellow livery set off with a Blu Nart and Bianco Avus central stripe as well as forged, 5-spoke Grigio Corsa wheels. While color-keyed to its exterior, the car's competition-inspired cabin design parallels that of the Speciale Coupe. New sport buckets are wrapped in in black Alcantara with yellow contrast stitching and 3D technical fabric inserts. Completing the look are new blue carbon fiber accents on the dash, door panels, central tunnel and door-sill plates

0-200 km/h (0-124 mph): 9.5 s

DRIVETRAIN

The greasy bits are the best bits when you are discussing a Ferrari, and the 458 Speicale A is no different. Sitting behind the two seats you will find a 4.5-liter, naturally aspirated V-8 that produces 596 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of twist. It is the most powerful naturally aspirated V-8 Ferrari has ever built for a roadster. It will complete the 0-to-60 mph run in less than three seconds. Expect a top speed at or around its coupe sibling’s 199-mph top speed.

ENGINE

The final part of the 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale that was upgraded was the 4.5-liter V-8 engine. Here, engineers gave the naturally aspirated, high revving engine a new air intake system made from carbon fiber, a full stainless steel exhaust with new mufflers and valve flaps, and a custom ECU software tune.

How to purchase the 458 Italia? Simply visit your local Ferrari dealership in California to be added to the 458 Italia interest list. There is no debating; the 458 Italia is the vehicle of all vehicles.

FERRARI 458 SPECIALE v/s AUDI R8

Sure, the Audi R8 V10 Spyder may not be as awesome as the 458 Speciale A in terms of weight reduction and overall performance, but few cars in this segment are. The Audi comes to the game with a 5.2-liter, V-10 powerplant that cranks out 525 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 398 pound-feet of twist at 6,500 rpm. This is enough oomph to clip 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and top out at 194 mph, both are much slower than the 458 Speciale.

The R8 V10 Spyder is priced from $168,950 with a manual transmission and $176,760 with a seven-speed automated manual trans. These lower prices and a proper row-your-own gearbox are things the R8 can hang its hat on in this competition.

2013 Top 10 Convertible Cars

Today's post is The top 10 convertible cars in the World with power,Luxury

1

2013 AUDI R8 SPYDER CONVERTIBLE

Audi recently released a ton of information on its upcoming 2013 lineup, but left off the R8, which led us to think that something big was coming up. With just a few days past, we have just learned exactly what big things Audi has in store for the 2014 R8 .

The R8 has always been a rather stunning-looking car, so our hopes were that Audi did not completely scrap the design and start all over again. Fortunately, our wishes were granted, as the initial images we have received show a car that is only slightly different than the one we see now. The changes were very mild and in places that the current-gen R8 was lacking a little.

The ultimate test is to dissect the images and information that we have available and see if these subtle changes were for the better or worse.

2

2013 AUDI A5 CABRIOLET CONVERTIBLE

For 2013, the Audi A5 and S5 family of luxury and performance-oriented coupes and convertibles gets a styling refresh, with a new front fascia and a new bumper and headlamp design. Inside, the A5 and S5 get a new instrument cluster and 3-spoke steering-wheel design, (the S5's features a racing-style flat-bottom version). Perforated Milano and Fine Nappa leather surfaces are new, with oak and aluminum trim. There's also a new black headliner option, and several new exterior colors have been added to the lineup.

2013 BMW 1 SERIES CONVERTIBLE

stylish, well-made four-seat convertible, the BMW 1 Series convertible offers almost every one of the coupe's fantastic driving characteristics, with its rear-wheel drive set-up really filling a gap in the convertible market. Fitted with quite considerable extra chassis stiffeners, the BMW's smallest convertible is always comfortable, even when driving on roughly surfaced roads. It's offered with a broad selection of marvellous 1 Series engines that have been tried and tested elsewhere in the range, including the very economical 120d diesel. Despite some shiny interior finishes, the interior is well made, but it does tend to feel a little dark with the roof up. The baby BMW 1 Series convertible comes in five specifications – the entry-level ES, SE, performance model M Sport, Sports Plus and Exclusive Edition.

2013 BMW Z4 CONVERTIBLE

With an exclusive body style and classic long-hood, short-deck proportions that emphasize design, performance, and weight distribution over practicality, the Z4 is the only dedicated sports car in BMW's current lineup. But if you think you know the Z4, beware that it's a different kind of sporting machine today than even a few years ago. While the Z4 used to be a rather lightweight roadster that felt like an aspirational step up from the Miata, the current-generation BMW Z4, that was introduced in 2009, has been a different kind of sports car--more of a premium open-top tourer, perhaps even one that's chasing the Porsche 911 Cabriolet or Jaguar XK Convertible.

Last year brought some significant engine updates, with a new turbocharged four-cylinder base engine that's much more fuel-efficient yet actually generates more torque than the six-cylinder it replaced. Now for 2013 BMW has increased standard equipment on the Z4 while also lowering the price about $1,300 for the base Z4.

The slung-back styling and ground-hugging look of the Z4 are like no other in the BMW lineup, and from just about any angle, the Z4 has plenty of that classic sports-car gravitas—although the proportions have been stretched a little bit in back to accommodate the folding hardtop. On the outside, we see influences from the current 6-Series lineup, although inside the Z4 feels unlike the rest of the current BMW lineup, with design that mostly pairs a cockpit-style layout with iDrive system and its advanced technologies well—though the center stack can appear a little cluttered.

All the engines offered in the Z4 are now turbocharged; in the Z4 sDrive28i you get a 2.0-liter turbo four, while the Z4 sDrive35i retains its 300-horsepower turbo 3.0-liter in-line six; there's also the Z4 sDrive35is, which packs 335 horsepower from a twin-turbo version of the in-line six. Paired with the six-speed manual transmission (an eight-speed automatic is available), the base Z4 is fun and smooth-driving, and there's a strong enough turbo kick in the low- to mid-rev range to seldom be caught in the wrong gear. A six-speed manual transmission is also standard on the sDrive35i as well, although there an available seven-speed dual-clutch unit truly combines the more connected driving experience of the manual with the comfort and ease of an automatic (that gearbox is included in the sDrive35is).

Across all the models, acceleration is brisk, with the

2013 CHEVROLET CORVETTE STINGREY CONVERTIBLE

Chevrolet decided to bring the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible to the Geneva Motor Show 2013. The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe saw its debut at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year. The first example has already sold for the lofty price of $1.4 million. The presentation of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible perhaps indicates an increased focus on the European market!

The new Corvette is the most powerful base Chevrolet Corvette ever produced. The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible features the same new generation LT1 GM V8 engine as the Coupe producing around 450hp. It is able to launch to 100km/h in under four seconds, pull over 1G when cornering and stop from 100km/h in a similar time to the Z06 Corvette.

To top off the impressive engine, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray also makes use of a seven-speed TREMEC manual transmission with Active Rev Matching. As the name suggests, Active Rev Matching helps the driver perform the perfect up-shift no matter their experience level. For those who prefer to relax when driving, it is also available with a six-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission.

2013 CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 CONVERTIBLE

At first glimpse, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible is every bit the muscle car you imagine it to be. If you’re within a hundred metres of it when its key is twisted, you will hear it. Listen to the exhaust. Any lumpier a camshaft, and you’d think the engine was about to choke on its fuel. Close your eyes, and as it blub-blub-blubs on by, it’s difficult not to picture a speed boat. Or a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro – pre-catalytic converter, of course – with a high-flow exhaust system. Muscle is alive. Muscle is well.

Being what it is, the inevitable question comes up: What’ll she do, mister? Here, the Camaro is well dressed to impress. The 6.2-litre we-don’t-need-no-stinkin’-overhead-cams LSA engine, assisted by an Eaton TVS supercharger, cranks out 580 horsepower and 556 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s the same engine that you’ll find under the hood of ze German-smiting Cadillac CTS-V, and a detuned version of what powers Chevy’s ultimate Corvette. This is parts-bin sharing we can definitely condone.

8

2013 FERRARI 458 SPIDER

The new Ferrari 458 Spider joins the 458 Italia, widening the range of Ferrari's mid-rear engined V8s and offering the same uncompromising technological solutions, handling and performance in a refined open-top configuration. It is equipped with a Ferrari patented, fully retractable hard top, a world first for a sports car with this lay-out.

The Ferrari 458 Spider is powered by Ferrari's 570 CV 4,499 cc V8 which was named International Engine of the Year 2011. The power is transferred to the road by Ferrari's class-leading dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift transmission through the sophisticated E-Diff, itself integrated with the F1-Trac traction control and high-performance ABS for maximum handling dynamics. The car delivers 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in under 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h.

Certain features, such as its accelerator pedal mapping and the damping of the multilink suspension, have been calibrated to guarantee maximum sportiness and absolute driving pleasure with the top down, in line with Maranello's exclusive spider tradition. Even the engine soundtrack has been honed to ensure that the car's occupants are completely captivated by the drop-top driving experience.

Entirely in aluminium, the hard-top solution adopted for the Ferrari 458 Spider offers a number of advantages over the traditional folding soft-top, including a reduction of 25 kg in weight compared to Ferrari F430 Spider and a deployment time of just 14 seconds. Fully integrated into the styling of the car, the hard-top was engineered to fit neatly ahead of the engine bay without compromising aerodynamics or the performance of the car. The small space needed to house the roof enables the designers to include a generous rear bench for luggage behind the seats.

The rear of the car is characterised by innovative forms with the buttresses designed to optimise the flow of air to the engine intakes and the clutch and gearbox oil radiators. For maximum comfort whilst driving top down the Ferrari 458 Spider features a generously-sized adjustable electric wind stop. The design was perfected to slow and diffuse the air in the cockpit, enabling normal conversation to be held even at speeds over 200 km/h.

New technical solutions adopted for the chassis guarantee identical levels of structural rigidity with the roof up or down. The result is a car that is truly exciting to drive, blending extreme performance with the responsiveness that has always characterised Ferrari's open-top berlinettas.

Its category-topping performance aside, the new car also boasts class-leading fuel consumption and emissions levels. Thanks to the HELE (High Emotion Low Emission) system, in fact, fuel consumption on the combined urban cycle stands at 11.8 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 275 g/km.

9

2013 FORD MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE

Summer’s here, although it didn’t seem like it during my week in the re-designed 2013 Ford Mustang Convertible. The convertible top was up far more than it was down, but that’s life on the "wet coast" – you just enjoy it when can and it can be very special.

The 2013 model year edition of the Mustang is almost as easy to spot in the dark (with its distinctive lighting) as it is in daylight.

This evolution of the Pony Car, however, is more than just cosmetic stuff as it also comes with updated technology features and new driver tools. To start with, there’s a new SelectShift Automatic trans-mission with a manual shifting feature. My test Mustang came with the 6-speed manual gearbox and it now comes with a Hill Start Assist (see Drive) system.

The base engine is a 3.7-litre V6 that has 24-valves, twin independent variable camshaft timing and serious grunt. It revs to 7,000 rpm, can deliver 305 horsepower and it’s a low-maintenance engine that’s designed to produce good power with less fuel and high-way fuel economy is particularly impressive.

The 5.0-litre V8 engine comes in the GT version and it can now deliver 420 horsepower, an eight-horsepower gain over the 2012 model (and on par with the Camaro). The GT also adds electric power assist steering (EPAS), an upgraded braking system with vented discs all around and an enhanced suspension.

There’s also a new GT Track Pack-age that features an engine cooler, an upgraded radiator, a Brembo brake package, a higher ratio Torsen differential and performance tires on 19-inch wheels.

Introduced last year, the power-to-weight ratios of these two sophisticated, lightweight all-aluminum engines are almost double that of their predecessors. Deeper (cast aluminum) oil pans also extend the oil change intervals to 16,000 km (dependent on usage and includes a filter change).

At the very top of the Mustang family in 2013 is the audacious Shelby GT500, which boasts the most powerful production V8 engine in the world. It’s a supercharged, aluminum block 5.8-litre that can produce 650 horsepower and deliver over 600 lbs.-ft of tire-smoking torque.

My test Mustang Convertible came in an aptly named "Grabber" blue paint that seemed to radiate colour. Powered by the base V6 engine and linked, as already mentioned, to a manual transmission, it had an extra $7,400 worth of options, including leather and an electronics package. Its total price came to $39,399.

10

2013 JAGUAR F-TYPE ROADSTER

The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show was home to Jaguar ’s debut of the C-X16 Concept and since the market’s reaction was so positive, the company has decided to offer a production version. After a long period of teasing, the new Jaguar F-Type has officially been unveiled at the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

The model will be offered in three different trim levels: F-Type, F-Type S, and F-Type V8 S. It will also come with a choice of two engines: a 3-liter supercharged V6 and a 5.0 liter V8 engine. The V6 version delivers 340 or 380 HP, depending on the trim level, while the V8 is only being offered in a 495 HP version. The F-Type was built on the most advanced rigid and lightweight aluminum architecture and with a total weight of just 3,521 lbs, it can hit speeds of up to 186 mph.

"Jaguar is a founding member of the sports car segment with a rich sporting bloodline stretching over 75 years, and in the F-TYPE we’ve reignited that flame. The F-TYPE isn’t designed to be like anyone else’s sports car. It’s a Jaguar sports car – ultra-precise, powerful, sensual and, most of all, it feels alive," said Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar.

3 Super Sports Cars

McLAREN P1

The McLaren P1 is a limited production plug-in hybrid supercar by English automotive manufacturer McLaren Automotive. The concept car debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Deliveries to retail customers began in the UK in October 2013. The entire P1 production of 375 units was sold out by November 2013.

It is considered to be the long-awaited McLaren F1 successor utilizing hybrid power and Formula 1 technology. It does not have the same three seat layout as its predecessor. The design of the headlights is also very similar to the shape of the McLaren logo. Just like the McLaren F1 road car of 1992, the McLaren P1 is a rear-wheel drive, mid-engine design that uses a carbon fibre monocoque and roof structure safety cage concept called MonoCage, which is a development of the MonoCell used in the current MP4-12C and MP4-12C Spider upgrade that came out in early 2012.

SPECIFICATION

The P1 features a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine similar to the engine found in the MP4-12C, but tuned to deliver 727 bhp and 719 Nm (531 lb ft) at 7500 rpm. Combined with an in-house developed electric motor, which produces 176 bhp and 260 Nm (192 lb ft), the P1 will have a total power and torque output of 916 PS (903 bhp) and 978 Nm (722 lb ft) respectively. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Power for the electric motor is stored in a 324-cell lithium-ion high density battery pack located behind the cabin. The battery can be charged by the engine or through plug in-equipment and can be fully charged in two hours. The car can be operated using either the petrol engine, the electric motor, or with a combination of the two, and has an all-electric range of at least 10 km (6.2 mi) on the combined European drive cycle with a max speed of 100 mph (160 km/h).
The P1 comes with Formula 1 derived features such as the Instant Power Assist System (IPAS), which will give an instant boost in acceleration via the electric motor, a Drag Reduction System (DRS) which operates the car's rear wing, thereby increasing straight line speed, and a KERS.

Both of these features (IPAS, DRS) are operated via two buttons on the steering wheel. The P1 will go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.8 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 6.8 seconds, and 0 to 300 km/h (186 mph) in 16.5 seconds, making it a full 5.5 seconds faster than the McLaren F1. It completes a standing quarter mile in 9.8 seconds at 152 mph (245 km/h). Top speed is electronically limited to 217.5 mph (350 km/h), but could theoretically reach 239 mph (385 km/h) with the limiter removed.

The P1 weighs 1,395 kg (3,075 lb), giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 647bhp/tonne. The P1 also features bespoke Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tyres and specially developed carbon-ceramic brakes from Akebono. It takes 6.2 seconds to brake from 186 mph (299 km/h) to standstill, during which it'll cover 246 metres. From 60 mph (97 km/h), it will cover 30.2 metres.

LAMBORGHINI VENENO

There are two models that we have all been awaiting to debut at Geneva. The first of those two models has been teased to the point that we pretty much already know what it will look like – the F70 by Ferrari – and the other has remained relatively mysterious. This mysterious model is the 50th anniversary vehicle from Lamborghini. Well, now the script has been flipped on its ear, as the official details on the new Veneno supercar have been released with just a few hours before its Geneva debut.

Like with all the other Lambo supercars, the new Venevo takes its name from the fighting arena: Veneno is one of the strongest and most aggressive fighting bulls ever. In 1914 he wounded the famous torero José Sánchez Rodríguez during the bullfight in the arena Sanlúcar de Barrameda’s, Andalusia, Spain.

Even though we are sorry to do it, we have to start this good news with bad news: the new Lamborghini Veneno will be limited to only three units, and despite its huge price tag of €3 million ($3.9 million at the current exchange rates), the model is already sold out!

FERRARI LaFERRARI

After years of speculation, the successor of the legendary Ferrari Enzo is finally out. The supercar made its world debut today at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and it comes with a rather unexpected surprise: its name!

Previous rumors suggested the model could be called either F70 or F150, but Ferrari decided to go with something odd: LaFerrari! No, it is not a joke!

Why did the company make such a radical decision on the name? Well, the answer is offered by Ferrari’s President, Luca di Montezemolo himself who declared: "because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence." While we appreciate his answer, we still have to admit the name sounds a little bit silly.

Everything else on the new LaFerrari is also a big surprise, starting with its exterior design language and up to the innovative HY-KERS system used for the first time in a production version Ferrari.

SPECIFICATION

LaFerrari is the first mild hybrid from Ferrari, providing the highest power output of any Ferrari whilst decreasing fuel consumption by 40 percent.LaFerrari's mid rear mounted 65° V12 Internal Combustion Engine has a 6.3 litre (6262 cc) capacity producing 800 PS (588 kW, 789 bhp) @ 9,000 rpm and 700 N·m (516 lb·ft) of torque @ 6,750 rpm, supplemented by a 163 PS (120 kW; 161 bhp) KERS unit (called HY-KERS), which will provide short bursts of extra power.

Unlike conventional hybrid vehicles, in which either the electric motor or the internal combustion engine is running, the KERS system adds extra power to the combustion engine's output level for a total of 963 PS (708 kW; 950 bhp) and the total torque generated by the V12 ICE together with the electric motor being over 900 N·m (664 lb·ft).Ferrari claims CO2 emissions of 330 g/km. The engine's bore and stroke is 94×75.2 mm with a compression ratio of 13.5:1 and a specific power output of 128 metric horsepower per litre. It is connected to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and the car is rear-wheel drive.

The car is equipped with carbon-ceramic Brembo discs on the front (398 mm) and rear (380 mm), with the tires measuring 265/30 R 19 and 345/30 R 20 respectively.

LaFerrari utilises a carbon fibre monocoque structure developed by Ferrari's F1 technical director Rory Byrne, with a claimed 27 percent more torsional rigidity and 22 percent more beam stiffness than the Enzo.It has a double wishbone suspension in the front and a multi-link suspension in the rear.
LaFerrari has a number of electronic controls including ESC stability control, high performance ABS/EBD anti-lock braking system/electronic brake balance, EF1-Trac F1 electronic traction control integrated with the hybrid system, E-Diff 3 third generation electronic differential, SCM-E Frs magnetorheological damping with twin solenoids (Al-Ni tube), and active aerodynamics to enable maximum performance.
