Top 10 Car Companies

10. Volkswagen

► Country : Germany
► Headquarters : Wolfsburg

                                            Headquaters

► Brands : Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, SEAT, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche, Scania, MAN, Ducati

► Introduction : Volkswagen has been the largest car maker in Europe since the 1970s. It also has the largest assembly plant (Wolfsburg) and best selling car (Golf) in Europe.

Being a German company, Volkswagen group positions its brands at the premium part of the market - Audi is mass premium, Volkswagen is semi-premium while Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti are prestige marques. Only the Spannish SEAT and Czech Skoda target at the lower end of the market, but they still share the high quality and engineering standard of the group because of extensive platform and component sharing.

9. Porsche

► Country : Germany
► Headquarters: Zuffenhausen of Stuttgart

                                                 Headquaters

► Brands : Porsche

► Introduction : Porsche is by far the largest sports car maker in the world. In recent years it enjoyed the highest profit margin in the industry, thus enabled it to acquire the giant Volkswagen group. However, the global financial collapse ruined its takeover plan, eventually resulted in counter takeover by Volkswagen.

8. Rolls-Royce

► Country : UK
► Headquarters and factory : Goodwood, UK.

                                                           Headquaters

► Brands : Rolls-Royce

► Intoduction : For almost a century, Rolls-Royce was seen as the most prestigous luxurious car brand in the world. Although engineering is no match for giant rivals like Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce is renowned for craftsmanship. It emphasized that its assembly is taking by experienced human hands with intensive care and using the most expensive materials in traditional British way. For that reason, Rolls-Royce cars are huge, heavyweight and ultra-expensive, targetting at only the richest people in the world.

Compare to Volkswagen's approach to Bentley, BMW's plan for Rolls-Royce is more loyal to the core values of RR. It maintained the market positioning, the styling and character of traditional Rolls-Royce. However, the conservative approach resulted in less sales than expected. Today it is still searching for ways to return the investment made by its parent company.

7. Bugatti

► Country : France
► Headquarters and factory: Molsheim, France.

                                                         Headquaters

► Brands : Bugatti

► Introduction : One of the most prestigous names in automotive history, Bugatti was resurrected by Volkswagen group in 1998. Today, it builds only one car, Veyron EB16.4, in the original site where Ettore Bugatti founded the company a century ago. Design and engineering are done in Germany by its parent company.

6. Ford

► Country : USA
► Headquarters: Dearborn (near Detroit), Michigan.

                                                Headquaters

► Brands : Ford,Lincoln

► Introduction : Ford had long been the No. 2 car maker in the world behind GM. However, in recent years it followed the declining trend of American auto industry and gradually slipped behind Toyota (in 2005) and Volkswagen (in 2007).

Ford operates 2 brands in its home market - Ford is for the majority people while Lincoln is the luxury brand. However, Ford did not have the required money to develop Lincoln, therefore most of its cars are usually badge-engineered versions of Ford.

Ford’s European operation and Australia arm have their own production and car development program independent of Detroit. The former is one of the European big 6 while the latter is struggling to retain its R&D and production independence. Ford used to own a third of Mazda, but in recent years it is offloading most stakes in the Japanese company and decoupling its product programs from the latter.

5. Audi

► Country : Germany
► Headquarters: Ingolstadt

                                                Headquaters

► Brands : Audi,Lamborghini

► Introduction : Audi is the jewel of the crown within Volkswagen group as well as the driving force of growth. Until the mid-1990s, Audi cars were still seen as poor man's Mercedes or BMWs. However, since the 1996 A4 and then the head-turning TT, Audi has established itself as a leader in style and quality. Its technology also shines in powerful turbocharged engines, quattro 4WD, aluminum spaceframe chassis and advanced transmissions. Now Audi has become a strong premium brand like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

4. Mercedes-Benz

► Country : Germany
► Headquarters: Stuttgart

                                   Headquaters

► Brands : Mercedes-Benz, Smart, Maybach

► Introduction : The name of Daimler is quite confusing. It used to be "Daimler-Benz", named after the two founders of the company, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz. In 1998, it merged with Chrysler and was therefore renamed to DaimlerChrysler. Following their divorce in 2007, the Germany company changed its name to "Daimler", losing the name of one of its co-founders.

Even more confusing is that Daimler never marketed its cars under its own name, because Jaguar holds the rights of the Daimler name due to some historical reasons. Instead, Daimler always sells its cars as "Mercedes-Benz", which is totally irrelevant to the group name now.

Daimler or Mercedes-Benz, it is the oldest car maker in the world and has long been the benchmark of mass production premium cars. Its truck division is the largest in the world.

3. Lamborghini

► Country : Italy
► Headquarters and factory: Sant'Agata, Bolognese, near Modena.

                                                                     Headquaters

► Brands : Lamborghini

► Introduction : Lamborghini is the only sport car brand can rival the prestige status of Ferrari. In many ways, it is even more exotic than Ferrari in the eyes of car lovers, thanks to the loss-making supercars it produced throughout its 40 years history - Miura, Countach, Diablo and Murcielago. Lamborghini has proven itself as the biggest headache to Enzo Ferrari because there is hardly a flagship Ferrari without a Bull to compete with.

Financial instability used to limit the success of Lamborghini. However, since acquired by Audi in 1998, it has been growing stronger and stronger. Thanks to Audi's quality standard, new generation of Lamborghinis no longer suffer quality problems like their predecessors. The cars are also made easier to live with. The addition of the smaller Gallardo allowed Lamborghini to target at a volume in excess of 2000 units, which brought financial stability to Sant'Agata for the first time.

2. BMW

► Country : Germany
► Headquarters: Munich

                                Headquaters

► Brands : BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce. (Unused brands: Triumph, Riley)

► Introduction : BMW is currently the largest premium car maker in the world, although Mercedes-Benz and Audi are not far behind. For decades, the Munich company has been renowned for making good driver's cars, therefore until today it still insists to use rear-wheel drive (or 4WD) in its cars. As rivals are catching up, it emphasizes more on advanced technology and efficient dynamics in recent years.

To expand to cheaper segments, where front-wheel drive is a must, BMW purchased Rover in 1994. It failed to turn around the British company, but it kept the MINI brand when it sold Rover in 2000. With adequate design and engineering, the reborn MINI has become the most successful new product line from BMW in years, more so than its own 1-Series.

In comparison, the investment in another British marque, Rolls-Royce, seems less successful. Although it got favourable comments from the press, it is still struggling to meet its sales target.

1. Ferrari

► Country : Itlay
► Headquarters, R&D and factory: Maranello, Modena.

                                                Headquaters

► Brands : Ferrari

► Introduction : Undoubtedly, Ferrari is the most famous sports car manufacturer in the world. This is not only due to its unmatchable success in Formula 1 racing history, but also the fabulous road cars it built through the years. Ferrari cars are renowned for sexy looks and spectacular speed. Since the 1990s they are also reasonably user friendly and reliable. In addition to their rarity and heritage, it is easy to see why Ferrari is the most sought after sports car marque from millionaires.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X Time Attack Victory at Autobahn Country Club

Ryan Gates dominated Round Three of the Redline Time Attack at the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Illinois. He captured the Modified AWD Class as well as the Overall Modified Class Championship in his 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X with K&N air and oil filters.Gates time in the Overall Modified Class Championship was 1:30.7 set a track record and was more than 2.3 seconds faster than the nearest competitor.

Saturday was practice day for the Time Attack,” said Gates. “We ran the practice sessions conservatively and focused on the chassis setup.”

On race day Gates was prepared. In Sunday’s first practice session, he made sure the Evo X was running well. He also had to determine his grid position by posting a lap time. “I posted a conservative lap,” he said. “I knew there was much more power in the Mitsubishi, about six seconds more.”

Gates was confident on the grid at the start of the Time Attack session. As soon as he was on the track and up to speed, Gates drove at 100 percent. His first time lap was very smooth and he flew onto the front straight away to cross the finish line with a quick lap time on 1:30.781. Gates next took a cool down lap in preparation for the third and final timed lap. The third lap went well, but he was conservative and posted a time of 1:32. The next closest competitor was 4 seconds behind.

Gates sat out the second Time Attack session, confident his lap time was more than fast enough to take the win and it was. “My K&N products last forever and help make power,” he said. “The K&N air filter also protected my engine from track debris. The K&N oil filter kept a constant flow of fresh oil circulating through the engine. Oil filters are important in Time Attack because the engines are constantly revving at a high rate and K&N oil filters work.”

2011 Mercedes SLS AMG "Gullstream" by FAB Design

► INTRODUCTION :

It’s one day into the much-anticipated Geneva Auto Show, and we’re up to our necks in new releases and concept cars. We promise more coverage of the positive as soon as we’re able to it dig out, but this is the Internet, and the hate can’t wait.

Ironically named Fab Design has come through with something we didn’t think possible, an SLS AMG we wouldn’t want to be caught dead in. From afar, its matte-blue paint looks to hold a sea of promise, but that’s where this ship stops sailing. Look closer, and you’ll see the “designer” has incorporated some downright awful bodywork, and set it on color-matched blue wheels that would look better on a Ford Probe.

Oh yeah, we don’t want to mention the interior, but it’s like a train-wreck of blue & white (no more remixes, please!) that you can’t stop staring at—and not in a good way.

Fab Design, ummm, you’re doing it wrong.

INFORMATION

Enzo Ferrari was a racing driver who founded the Italian sports car manufacturer bearing his name. Ferrari cars are generally seen as a symbol of luxury and wealth.

He was born Enzo Anselmo Ferrari on February 18, 1898, in Modena, Italy. His father, Alfredo Ferrari, had a metal business. At the age of 10 Enzo saw several car races in the 1908 Circuit di Bologna, and he decided to become a race car driver. He received little formal education, and in his youth during WWI he was shoeing mules during his assignment to the Alpine Artillery division of the Italian Army. Both his father and brother died in 1916 as a result of Italian flu outbreak and the family business collapsed.

Ferrari himself became severely ill during the 1918 flu epidemic which he barely survived, and was discharged from Italian service. He applied for a job at Fiat, was turned down and eventually got a job as a test driver at a small car-maker named CMN. In a 1919 race at the Targa Florio he finished ninth. With the help of his friend Ugo Sivocci he got a job with Alfa-Romeo in 1920, and had success as a racing driver. In 1923, young Ferrari won the Circuit of Sivocci at Ravenna. There, he acquired the legendary ace pilot Francesco Baracca's WWI pilot badge, a prancing horse on a yellow shield. This icon would have to wait until 1932 to be displayed on a racing car.

Enzo Ferrari's greatest victory was at the 1924 Coppa Acerbo at Pescara, with an Alfa Romeo R.L. That and many more successful races made Ferrari a recognized name. In 1925 Benito Mussolini seized power in Italy and established a totalitarian fascist regime that sponsored an aggressive nationalism as a mimic of the Roman Empire. The name of a winning driver, like Ferrari, was used as one of many propaganda tools. He was awarded the Cavaliere dell'ordine della Corona d' Italia and was promoted to the rank of Commendatore. In Mussolini's eyes Ferrari had won all his races for Italy. In reality it was the only job Ferrari could do.

In 1926, overburdened and stressed, Ferrari experienced an emotional breakdown and stopped racing. He turned down a few offers, including one for a big race in Mussolini's presence. He switched to fixing cars for Alfa, but his racing career was mostly over, though he did race in 1927 and a few times thereafter, but with less success than he had previously. In 1929 he started Scuderia Ferrari, a team of racing drivers and technical assistants working for Alfa. Ferrari soon made similar deals with Bosch, Pirelli and Shell. His team caused a sensation after eight victories in 22 competitions. With up to 50 full- and part-time drivers, it was the largest team ever gathered by one man.

Ferrari's talent as a team organizer and director superseded that of a racer. He completely retired from racing in 1932, when his first son Dino was born. In 1937 he quit Alfa-Romeo under agreement that he could not race or design anything under his name for four years. During World War II, Ferrari's company was forced to undertake war production for Mussolini's fascist government, thus supplying auto parts for the Italian military. Allied bombing forced him to relocate the factory from Modena to Maranello. After WWII Ferrari was able to shed his fascist-tainted reputation. He concentrated all efforts on the design of the car that would carry his name.

In 1946 Ferrari Tipo125, a 1.5-liter car, was built in collaboration with his old friend G. Colombo, and it was entered in the 1947 Grand Prix of Monaco. Ferrari participated in the first F-1 World Championship in 1950. He won the 1951 F-1 British Grand Prix and dominated the World Championships in the early 50s. He also had a business victory when Lancia withdrew from racing and its parent company, Fiat, turned over all Lancia's cars to Ferrari. His F-1 successes in 1956, 1958, 1961 and 1964 were paralleled by even more victories at the Mille Miglia and Le Mans. His total of 14 victories at Le Mans included six in a row in 1960-1965.

The postwar economic boom ended for Ferrari in 1956, when his son Dino died of muscular dystrophy, causing the end of Enzo's marriage. Ferrari was depressed and, having not many friends, moved into a small apartment at his factory. There he lived and worked 24/7 without a vacation for many years. He wore sunglasses as a ritual to honor his son. His management skills and attention to details helped the business through a decline in the 60s. In 1963 he rejected an $18-million offer from Ford to buy his company. In 1965 he allowed Fiat to have a small stake the company; their share increased to 50% in 1969 and and to 90% in 1988. Ferrari remained managing director until 1971, and was influential until his death at the age of 90 on August 14, 1988, in Modena, Italy.

The Scuderia Ferrari team won several F-1 championships with driver Michael Schumacher between 1999-2004. The name of the company's founder was given to the 2003-2004 production model. It was built with F-1 technology: carbon-fiber body, F-1 sequential-shift transmission, and carbon-ceramic brake discs. The Enzo Ferrari is the first model to have the new V12 power plant, making it the fastest street-legal race car Ferrari has ever produced. It shares the base platform with its twin, the Maserati MC12, which is both a street car and a GT racing car. Only 399 Enzo Ferraris were built and sold to subscribers.
